Louisiana Purchase
1800 France and Spain secretly signed a

The French had given the area to the Spanish

Louisiana Purchase
Problem: The Constitution didnt give the
central government authority to purchase land
that way.
Because time was essential, Jefferson
submitted the treaty to the Senate, which was
approved.
The purchase doubled the size of the United
States.

Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon wanted to sell to the Americans
because he knew defending the area if war
broke out would stretch the French too thin.
He felt it was better to sell to get money for
war with Britain than lose the land and end
up with nothing.
