How to assess own and peer performance??
How to assess own and peer performance??
Understanding the success criteria
Evaluate own and peer performance against the success criteria
Try to be honest
Aims for improvement
Laying the Foundations:
Students do not become self-evaluative
overnight.
The development of peer and self-
assessment takes time, planning and
patience.

Why bother with Peer and Self-Assessment?
Students are more likely to make progress if they
can understand what they are aiming for the
success criteria.
Peer and Self-Assessment will help students to
develop a deeper understanding of what makes a
good piece of work - so they will be more able to
achieve that level of work.

Why bother with Peer and Self-Assessment?
Peer Assessment will help students to work
collaboratively and share ideas.
These skills are valuable in their own right, but
they also help students to develop a deeper
understanding of a topic or concept.

Why bother with Peer and Self-Assessment?
Self-Assessment will help students to develop a
sense of independence and self-evaluation.

Peer assessment allows students to talk on their

own level and discuss work in a way that they
understand. This type of feedback can be easier
to grasp and act upon than advice offered by
teacher.

Peer and self assessment: complementary
partners
by judging work of others, students gain insight
into their own performance

they gain a sense of ownership of the

assessment process, thus improving motivation

they learn to evaluate their own and their peers

achievements realistically (lifelong learning)
Strategy for Self Assessment
I learned statement

Clear and unclear windows

Clear window: What from todays lesson would you be able to teach to
another class?
Unclear window: Note things that were not clear to you in this lesson, such
as questions about particular concepts, terms that did not make sense, and
sections of the days lesson that were missed for some reason.
Self check activities:
What am I learning?
Why am I learning it?
How am I learning it?
How successful is my learning?
How can I demonstrate my learning?
What am I going to do next?
what do we mean by peer assessment?
peer tutoring /mentoring

peer feedback (written and oral)

peer grading of work

peer grading and tutor modified
