• A machine which performs the material

removal operation with tools, to produce
desired shape and size of the work pieces
• The purpose of machine tool is to save the
time, cost of production and to get better
output which can not be obtained with
hand tools
• Ex: lathes, shapers, planers, drilling
machines and grinding machines etc

• Its main objective is to remove material from
outside by rotating the work against the
cutting tool
• Lathe is used to produce cylindrical jobs
• Also used for drilling, threading, grinding and
milling etc

• The work piece is held in a chuck or between
centres and rotated about its axis at a uniform
speed
• The cutting tool is held in the tool post is fed
into a work piece for a desired depth and in
the desired direction
• Material is removed in form of chips and the
desired shape is obtained.
