Bohlman, EARLY LITERACY Mandie Hill, and Pamela DEVELOPMENT Henderson PURPOSE OF RESEARCH
The purpose of the study was to see of the running
records treatment would have a higher student achievement in reading and writing than would schools assigned to an alternative treatment (action research). - Action research is discussing students problems in the classroom with colleagues for immediate problem solving. WHY WAS THIS RESEARCH DONE?
To improve a teachers reading and writing strategies
through different assessment ideas.
Comparing and contrasting assessment ideas will
ultimately help the students reading comprehension and writing success. METHODOLOGY
1 . Assign Canadian schools certain area of treatment (running
record) or (action research). 2. Grade chosen: 3 rd grade 3. Student achievement consisted of schools scores for grade 3 reading, writing, and math from may in 2001/2002 4. Teachers assessed from specific directions from a testing organization for 2 hours a day for 5 days a week. 5. Principles and a team of teachers would dedicate time to identified a professional issue related to early literacy to work on, devised improvement activities, implemented the action plans, and reflected on and reported the results. 6. Multiphase process that consisted of (a) identifying a measurable goal, (b) designing action plans, (c) collecting and analyzing data on the effects of the intervention, and (d) reflecting on the results . DATA FINDINGS OF RESEARCH
Finding: The researchers found that in a controlled experiment
there is a direct correlation between schools who engage in classroom assessment procedures (particularly running records) and high student literacy. IMPLICATIONS AS PRESENTED BY RESEARCHERS The implications of this study state that engaging in running records contributed to higher achievement in reading and writing. A important aspect to note is the importance in collaboration with the principal and their support in implementing transformational leadership. CONCLUSION/APPLICATIONS
This study suggests that the new wave of school ef fectiveness
research is likely to be more useful because it identifies through qualitative investigations specific behaviors occurring in naturalistic settings. In this study, implementation of running records, a classroom assessment system, contributed to higher achievement in reading and writing, as predicted by ef fective schools research Essential element of the intervention was a support system for teachers developed in collaboration with principals working from a transformational leadership stance and coordination of their actions with other change agents Application: As future teachers we can collaborate with other teachers and discuss new wave school ef fectiveness research and how to apply this to our classrooms. For example, utilizing running records. BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
