The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Nullification Crisis Protective tariffs as much
as 50% on some imports were imposed in
1828.
The commercial North welcomed it, but the
southern states referred to it as the Tariff of
Abominations.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Nullification Crisis Southern states argued
that the tariffs favored particular classes and
sections of the country, which was
unconstitutional.
South Carolina invoked the Kentucky And
Virginia Resolutions that claimed states
could overrule unconstitutional federal acts.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Nullification Crisis Vice President John C.
Calhoun anonymously wrote an anti-tariff
pamphlet, proposing a middle ground
between submission and secession.
States could reject unconstitutional
congressional acts.
Congress would then either change the law or
send it back to the states as a constitutional
amendment.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Nullification Crisis states would support or
reject the nullification argument depending
on how it benefited them.
In 1832, a revised tariff was passed, but it was
still higher than what the South wanted.
Tensions between Calhoun and Jackson were
evident and Calhoun resigned.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Nullification Crisis South Carolina
threatened to secede if the tariff duties were
collected, but they had little support.
Jackson threatened to hang Calhoun and
passed the Force Bill, which gave the
president war powers against South Carolina.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Nullification Crisis Henry Clay proposed a
gradual reduction of the Tariff of 1832,
which was acceptable to South Carolina.
South Carolina also nullified the Force Bill.
The crisis deepened division and
sectionalism in the United States.

Busting the Bank
Jackson didnt like the National Bank and
blamed it for the Panic of 1819.
When the charter for the bank came up for
renewal, Jackson vetoed it, claiming it
unconstitutional.
The result was a loss of financial stability.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
In the election of 1832, three political
precedents arose:
Anti-Masonic party - a 3rd political part came
out against secret societies, Catholic
immigration, and supported federally-funded
internal improvements.
Platform a written statement about where the
party stood on various issues.
National Convention gathering of state
delegated to nominate the partys candidates.

Election of 1832
Henry Clay, wanting to win election himself,
lost to Jackson with Martin Van Buren now
Vice President.
Jackson had his Secretary of the Treasury move
all money in the federal reserve to state banks.

The Peoples President
Busting the Bank
State banks became the producers of currency,
which led to 25,000 different varieties of notes
between 1836-1864.
The loss of the national bank resulted in
inflation, speculation and worthless paper
money.
The Age of Jackson
The Peoples President
Busting the Bank
Jackson issued the Specie Circular of 1836 to
slow down inflation.
It only allowed gold or silver to be use to buy
land, not paper money.
This limited credit and the availability of
specie, and resulted in a depression.
