Some Quick Questions
Each of the following sentences needs either a comma or a semicolon, OR it is correct as it is. Put in the
necessary punctuation, or write that it is correct. You dont have to write out the complete sentence! You
may write on your paper just the word before the comma or semicolon.
1. He looked carefully in the underbrush but he failed to notice the pair of green eyes staring at him.
2. The snowstorm dumped twelve inches of snow on the interstate subsequently, the state police closed
the road.
3. The suspect said that he had never met the victim however, the detective knew that he was lying.
5. Not all highly educated people enjoy traveling, but many world travelers are particularly well educated.
Connects two independent clauses with no connecting words OR with
a conjunctive adverb.
For example, Paris says that Juliet weeps too much over Tybalts
death; he says that this rushed marriage will be good for her. (Page
101, Lines 6-15)
Why cant we connect these clauses with a comma?
OR Friar Laurence knows the real reason Juliet does not want to
marry Paris; therefore, he says I would I knew not why it should be
slowed. (Page 101, Line 116)
What conjunctive adverb is being used?

1. Paris then says that Juliets face is his, consequently, Juliet replies that her
face is not her own.
2. Paris then says that Juliets face is his; consequently, Juliet replies that her
face is not her own
Which one is correct?
The conjunctive adverb ________ signals a connection between
two independent clauses, and commas should not be used to connect
independent clauses if there is no coordinating conjunction.

1. Juliet asks the Friar to cry with her because she is past:
hope; which refers to her future, a cure; which refers to
her upcoming situation, and of any help; which can refer
