14.5: Series Resonance
• The most prominent feature of the frequency response of a circuit
is the sharp peak (or resonant peak) exhibited in its amplitude
characteristic.

• Resonance occurs in any system that has a complex conjugate pair

of poles;

• it is the cause of oscillations of stored energy from one form to

another.

• It is the phenomenon that allows frequency discrimination in

communications networks
• Resonance occurs in any
• circuit that has at least one inductor and one capacitor.

• The average power dissipated by the RLC
circuit is 1
p ( w)  I 2R
2
• The highest power dissipated occurs at
resonance, when I = Vm/R, so that
1V2
p( w0) 
2 R

• certain frequencies ω = ω1, ω2, the dissipated

power is half the maximum value; that is,

• Notice that the quality factor is
dimensionless.

Q 
R 0 RC

• The relationship between the

bandwidth B and the quality factor Q is

R 0
B  
L Q

13
• The quality factor of a resonant circuit is the ratio of its resonant
frequency to its bandwidth.

Q
0
B
• As illustrated in Fig. 14.23, the higher the value of Q,
– the more selective the circuit is but
– the smaller the bandwidth.

• For high-Q circuits (Q ≥ 10),

• At high Q the half power frequencies are, for all practical purposes,
symmetrical around the resonant frequency and can be approximated as
B B
1  0  ,  2  0 

PARALLEL RESONANCE

• The parallel RLC circuit in Fig. 14.25 is the dual of the series RLC Circuit
shown before.
• The admittance is

14.6: Parallel Resonance

• Resonance occurs when

imaginary part of Y is equal to
zero.

Filter
A filters is a circuit that is designed to
pass signals with desired frequencies
and reject or attenuate others.
