Bartholin's cyst
• The Bartholin glands are the major glands of the vestibulum.
• Anatomically, they are located at both sides of the hymen, under the labia
majora.
• The function of the Bartholin glands is tosecrete mucus into the introitus.

Ozturk M, Çil Y, Kıncı F, Çermik H, Atypically Localized Bartholin Cyst in Adolescence, Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (2016)
• A Bartholin cyst occurs when any of the ducts are blocked, for either
infectious or noninfectious reasons, and the secretion of mucus from the
gland is obstructed.
• These glands cannot be detected during an examination unless they become
cystic
• The majority are unilateral, nontender cystic masses located in the lateral
introitus.
• Larger cysts and abscess tend to cause severe vulvar pain and swelling
such that the patient experiences difficulty in walking, sitting and engaging in
sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
