Lesson 1: Data Mover Failover

During this lesson the following topics are covered:
• The failover process and policies
• Standby Data Movers
• Planning and Configuring Data Mover failover

Failover Process
• Primary Data Mover (DM) fails
• Designated Standby Data Mover is activated as a spare
 Requires identical network configuration

Data Mover failure detection
• Failover occurs under any of these conditions
 Data Mover panic: A hardware or software faults
 Data Mover hang: A condition that leads to both internal down
 Failover failure: Failure during a failover operation.
 Spontaneous Data Mover reset
• Failover does not occur under these conditions
 Manually restarting a Data Mover
 Removing a Data Mover its slot
 Network Failure

Standby Data Mover
• Hot-spare for Primary Data Movers
• Can act as a spare for up to 7 primaries (depending on model)
 Recommended ratio is at least one Standby for three primaries
• For the highest availability, use 1:1 ratio
• On a two Data Mover VNX, server_3 is pre-configured as a
Standby for server_2
• VNX OE software is the same for all hardware platforms

Failover Policies
• Pre-determined action
• Invoked by the Control Station when it detects a failover
condition
• Policy types
 Auto
 Retry
 Manual

Planning for Data Mover Failover
• Determine Primary and Standby Data Movers
 Ensure Primaries and Standbys have the same network hardware
components
 Standbys are free of any configurations
• Switch ports of the Standby Data Movers are assigned to the
same VLANs as the Primary
• Ethernet Jumbo frame configuration related to Primary Data
Mover ports are in place for the Standby Data Mover
• Network configuration must be identical
 Speed/Duplex
 LACP / Link aggregation
 Fail Safe Networking (FSN)

Failover Configuration
Server
• To configure server_3 as role
the Standby for server_2:

1. Select System > Hardware >

Data Movers
Standby
2. Select the Data Mover, and DM
click Properties.
3. Set Standby Movers to
Failover
server_3 policy
4. Failover Policy, auto
5. Click Apply

Data Mover Failover Testing Considerations
• Test Data Mover failover periodically/regularly (e.g. Quarterly)
• Perform test at low/no impact times
• When testing, validate the following
 Standby assumes the identity of Primary
 VLAN membership and LACP configuration
 User access to:
 File systems
 Shares
 Home directories

Testing Data Mover Failover
• Run the following CLI Command to manually activate the Standby Data
Mover
server_standby <primary_DM> –activate mover

Restoring a Data Mover After Failover
System > Hardware > Data Movers
• Select Data Mover to restore and click Restore

Deleting a Failover Relationship
• To delete Standby relationship: • To change Data Mover from Standby
Hardware → Data Movers > Server_x to Primary: Hardware → Data
→ uncheck field Standby Movers Movers → server_x → select Role:
Primary
