Electrical Safety Checklist
 Hands are dry when using electrical appliances.
 All appliances are used away from water.
 All leads and plugs are kept away from water.
 All cords and plugs are in good condition.
 All switches and power points are in good condition.
 All plugs are fully pushed into power points.
 There are enough power points for all the
appliances we need to use.
Objectives:
At the end of the experiment, the student should be able :
i. to read the value of resistors using the colour code

i. to connect resistors in series and parallel and

ii. to use the DMM for resistance measurement.

Equipment required :
 1 DMM
 6 Resistors (R1 to R6)
Notebook Activity
 Describe continuity test for wires.
• (a)   Disconnect wire from the component (light, relay, motor, etc.) at the working
end of the circuit and from the power end.
• (b)   Set up truck conditions that will create the desired circuit.
• (c)    Check continuity from power end of the wire to the working end of the wire. 1
If continuity is not measured go to step (d).
• If continuity is measured, the fault has not been isolated. Continue with the fault
isolation tests or notify supervisor.
• (d)   Disconnect the first connector from the working end of the wire in line to the
power source.
• (e)   Check continuity.
• If continuity is not measured, go to step (f).
• If continuity is measured, a fault is in the section of the wire most recently
disconnected. Repair the wire and perform the continuity test again.
• (f)    Repeat Steps (d) and (e) until all sections of the suspect wire are tested.
Information on colour code
Most resistors are color-coded with bands of color so
that they can be mounted in any position and still be
read. Each digit from 0 to 9 is represented by a color in
the visible light spectrum. These colors are used in the
order of their frequencies from infrared to ultraviolet.
The colours used are Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow,
Green, Blue, Violet, Gray and White representing the
digits from 0 to 9, respectively.
The value of the resistance of a color-coded resistor is
given with the first for color bands. The first two bands
are the first two significant figures of the resistance. The
third band is the number of zeros that follow. The
number of zeros also denotes the power of ten.

Multiplier

Gold and silver are used in the third bank for decimal
multipliers and in the fourth band for the tolerance of
the value given in the first three bands.

The numbers represented by the color code are read

from the end of the resistor that has color bands
closest to it. Refer to the table below to find the value
of color-coded resistors.
COLOUR FIRST BAND SECOND BAND MULTIPLIER TOLERANCE

Black 0 0 1
Brown 1 1 10
Red 2 2 100
Orange 3 3 1,000
Yellow 4 4 10,000
Green 5 5 100,000
Blue 6 6 1,000,000
Violet 7 7 10,000,000
Gray 8 8 100,000,000
White 9 9 1,000,000,000
Gold - - 0.1 +/- 5%
Silver - - 0.01 +/- 10%
No Band - - - +/- 20%
Procedure
1. Using the colour coded table determine the value and tolerance of the resistors
provided.
Colour Resistor Value Tolerance
Orange, Orange, Red, Gold R1 3.3 x 1000 +/- 5%
Green, Blue, Red, Gold R2 5.6 x 1000 +/- 5%
Silver, Red, Red, Gold R3 8.2 x 1000 +/- 5%
Red, Red, Yellow, Gold R4 2.2 x 100 +/- 5%
Brown, Black, Yellow, Gold R5 1.0 x 100 +/- 5%
Brown, Green, Yellow, R6 1.5 x 100 +/- 5%

2. Connect up the circuits shown using the color code to identify the resistors
required. In each case use your multi-meter as an ohmmeter to measure the
total resistance across the relevant pair of terminals.

3. Complete the blanks for circuit 1 to circuit 3. Show workings for calculated
values.

Conclusion

1. What is the color-codes for the following resistor :

75 k +/- 5% : Violet, Green, Orange, Gold.

2. For circuit 3, calculate the resistance R13 (show working).
