Background of the Study
 Non-routine problem solving (NRPS) in
mathematics curriculum aimed to develop
mathematical reasoning power and fostering
that mathematics is a creative endeavor.

 Having students do NRPS encourages the

move from specific to general thinking - the
ability to think in more abstract ways.

 Deep understanding of NRPS experiences

help teachers in planning a positive learning
environment for students.

Objectives of the Study
 Describe education Students’ general
description of their experiences in solving
non-routine problems in mathematics;

 Identify factors affecting student

performances in non-routine problem
solving in mathematics; and

 Identify coping strategies on the difficulties

encountered by education students in non-
routine problem solving.

Methodology
 Employed Exploratory Case Study

 Sixty-two (62) education students of

SLSU enrolled in the subject problem
solving were the participants of the study.

 Experiential Survey – interview, FGD,

and Journal Writing

 Narrative and Thematic Analysis,

General Implication/Conclusion:
 Students’ experiences with NRPS is a
mixture of:

 Failure and Success

 Fear and Excitement

 Frustration and Satisfaction

 Competition and Cooperation

Recommendations:
 Various creative mathematical activities must be
implemented to cater complex responses of the
students in doing NRPS;

 A more personal and contextual mathematical

experiences must be provided to students in the
classroom through real life problem solving.

 Intensify mathematics majors’ exposure to

routine and non-routine problems to enhance
problem solving skills and performance.
