This style was primarily used in interior
design, painting architecture and
sculpture. The term was derived from the
word “rocaille”, which means pebbles
and refers to the rocks and shells that
were used to decorate the interiors of
caves, so the shells became the principal
adornment in Rococo.
This style appealed to senses rather than
intellect. The themes used were
romance, mythology, fantasy and every
day life. The wealthy women competed
for the best and most elaborated
decorations in their houses, so interior
and furniture were decorated with
abstracts and curves and asymmetrical
shapes.
