The most basic things we measure are:

 Voltage

 Current

 Resistance

 Continuity

 Capacity

 Temperature

 Frequency

A multimeter’s is also great for some checks and troubleshooting in electric circuit’s.

Parts of Multimeter:

 Selector Switch and Key’s

 Connections for test probes

 Cover protection in ruber

Measuring Voltage

 To start, let’s measure voltage on a AA battery:

 Plug the black probe into COM and the red probe into connector (mA–V – Ω)

 Set the multimeter to the Max. DC (direct current) range or select autorange
What happens if you switch the red and black probes?

 The reading on the multimeter is simply negative.

 The multimeter measures voltage in relation to the

common probe.
Measuring Resistance:

 Isolate the component or circuit section that requires measurement

to ensure a correct reading occurs.
 Avoid touching the metal probes of the ohmmeter as this may lead to
a false reading.
 If the multimeter reads 1 or displays OL, it’s overloaded, simply
means the range switch selector needs to be adjusted.
 Remember that many resistors have a % tolerance
Measuring Current:

 The connections of the test probes, on a range in mA and A

mA A
Measuring Current flow:

 Reading current

 It’s tricky because you have to measure current in series.

 You have to physically interrupt the flow of current and put

the meter in line.
Measuring current with a current clamp:

 The adapter enables the easy exchange of

current measurement in AC current
Measuring capacity:

 The Capacitance is the measure of how much electrical energy is

stored in a capacitor used in an electronic circuit.

 The unit for measuring capacitance is the farad.

Probe Types

 The test Probes models

Continuity by testing the resistance between two points

 The multimeter is looking for very low resistance to see if two points
are connected.

 If we don’t have resistance between two point’s, a tone like beep

will ears, until you maintain the probes in the circuit.

 For example Test a switch

Changing the fuses protection on the multimeter

 Depends of the models

 Consulting the manual of the equipment to see the exact
characteristics of the fuses.
 Don´t install fuses with a different values of the recommend by the
supplier, because when you have a problem could damage the
equipment.
The auto ranging multimeters?

 A good click on the range selector is actually a major plus in our

book

 Auto-off is a great feature that is rarely seen on cheaper

multimeters.

 Internationals iso Certifies

 A bag to transports
