• The client will approach the designer, who is often a consulting engineer or
architect, and commission him or her to produce a design satisfies the requirement.
• The first thing that the designer will request from the client is a clear description of
exactly what is wanted, This is called the design brief.
SAMPLE DESIGN BRIEF
• Client’s Name. Dr Ravi Ariyaratnam
• Description: Dr Ray Ariyaratnam (45 yrs) is a consultant cardiologist working at the general hospital. He does not practice at private
Channel centers and prefers to spend his free time with children. He earns around Rs 100000.00 as salary and earnings as a regular
medical writer of medical journals and magazines. He is married and has a daughter (15yrs, studying at a girls’ school), two sons
aged 12 and 10 yrs (both go to the same school) Mrs. Ariyaratnam (40 yrs) is a teacher and earns around Rs. 25,000 00 a month. They
have decided to build a luxury house and prefer two-storyed building where all bedrooms except a visitor’s room are located on the
upper floor. Ground floor should have a living room, a dining room, a pantry, a conventional kitchen a visitor’s room with attached
toilet, a visitor’s toilet (separate) and a study room for children and Mrs. Ariyaratnam. In the upper floor, they need a master
bedroom with attached toilet/bath; three bedrooms attached toilet/bath and an office room for Dr Ariyaratnam. Access to all rooms
in the upper floor should be through the upper floor living room Ariyaratnam’s have two servants, a driver/gardener and a maid,
two bedrooms and a servant’s toilet are needed in the ground floor. Ariyaratnam’s children and Mrs. Ariyaratnam travel to school
by bus. Dr Ariyaratnam uses the family car driven by the driver for his office travel and shopping. They plan to spend around Rs 15
