 Antiviral drugs are a class of medication used
specifically for treating viral infections rather than
bacterial ones. Most antivirals are used for
specific viral infections, while a broad-spectrum
antiviral is effective against a wide range of viruses.[
 Action – inhibits viral activity by an unknown
mechanism, possibly by inhibiting RNA and DNA
synthesis by depleting intercellular nucleotide pools
 Dosages-
capsules(200mg),tablets(200mg)(400mg)(500mg) P.O
 Common side effects- fatigue, anxiety, headache,
insomnia
Adefovir
 Action- an acyclic acid nucleotide analogue that
inhibits hepatitis b virus reverse transcription via DnA
chain termination.
 Dosage- tablets(10mg) P.O
 Side effects- asthenia, fever, headache, nausea,
vomiting
 Action- inhibit HBV polymerase and reduces viral DnA
levels
 Dosages- oral-sol..(0.05ml) tablets(0.5-1mg ) P.O
 Side effects- dizziness, fatigue, headache, diarrhea,
nausea
 Action-may inhibit tumor or viral cell replication and
modulate host immune response by enhancing
macrophage activity.
 Dosage- powder for injection( IM,IV)
 Side effect- apathy, amnesia, fatigue, paresthesia.
 Action- a synthetic nucleoside analogue that inhibits
HIV and HBV reverse transcription via viral DnA chain
termination.
 Dosage-oral –sol(10mg/ml) tablets(150mg,300mg) PO
 Side effect- dizziness, fatigue, anorexia, nausea,
vomting
 Action-interferes with DnA synthesis and inhibits viral
multiplication.
 Dosages- capsules(200mg)cream(5%),
injection(500mg/vial),tablets(400mg,800mg)
PO,BUCCAL,IV,TOPIAL
 Side effect- headache, malaise, gum pain, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea.
 Action- suppresses CMV replication by selective
inhibition of viral DnA synthesis
 Dosage- injection(75mg/ml in 5ml vial) IV
 Side effect- fever, headache, abdominal pain,anorexia,
nausea, vomiting.
 Action-a guansine nucleoside that is converted to
penciclovir, which enter viral cell and ihibits DnA
polymerase and viral DnA synthesis.
 Dosage- tablets( 125mg, 250mg, 500mg) PO.
 Side effect- headache, nausea, abdominal pain,
diarrhea, vomiting
