PETROL ENGINE

 Also known as a Gasoline Engine

Is an internal combustion engine with
Petrol spark-ignition, designed to run on
engine petrol and similar volatile fuels.
It was invented in 1876 in Germany
by German inventor Nicolaus August
Otto.
Compression Ratio
The compression ratio is a value that represents the
ratio of the volume of its combustion chamber from its
largest capacity to its lower capacity.
Speed and Efficiency

 petrol engines run at higher speeds than diesels,

partially due to their higher pistons, connecting rods
and due to petrol burning faster than diesel.
 They also tend to have a much shorter stroke and
therefore petrol engines pistons can move up & down
much quicker than a diesel engines.
Design
two-stroke cycle

Four–stroke cycle
Two-Stroke
Applications
Two stroke engines are found on:
 Weed trimmers
 Snowmobiles
 Older dirt bikes
 Chainsaws
 Nitro R/C Cars
 Small outboards
 Older Jet skis
Two stroke engines operate on the same principles as a four
stroke engine.

 Intake- Fuel mixture is drawn into crankcase during

upstroke
 Compression- mixture is compressed in the crankcase
during downstroke and again during upstroke before
combustion
 Combustion-fuel is recompressed and ignited in cylinder
during upstroke
 Exhaust- burned mixture is forced out by fresh mixture
being forced in during downstroke

Piston fires once every revolution. No traditional valves

like a four-stroke. Piston serves as a “valve” by covering the
ports.
Four- Stroke Engine
 also known as Four Cycle

Internal combustion engine in which the

piston completes four separate strokes-
intake, compression, power, and exhaust.

There are two common types of four-

stroke engines.

Alphonse Beau de Rochas in 1861.

Advvantages and Disadvantages of two stroke
engines
Advantages:
 It has no valves or camshaft mechanism, hence simplifying
its mechanism and construction.
 Less eight and easier to manufacture.
 For one complete revolution of the crankshaft, the engine
executes one cycle- the 4 stroke executes one cycle per
two crankshafts revolutions.

Disadvantages
 The lack of lubrication system that protects the engine
parts from wear. Accordingly, the 2-stroke engines have a
shorter life
 2 stroke engines do not consume fuel efficiently.
 It produce lots of pollutions.
