GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW

Temperature and Pressure Relationship

A French chemist
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? an physicist
Joseph-Louis Gay Lussac proved the
effect of temperature in the motion
of gas particles. He found out that
the pressure of a gas increased or
decreased proportionally with a
change in temperature. His law
states that the pressure of a fixed
amount of a gas is directly
proportional to the absolute
IT CAN BE MATHEMATICALLY EXPRESS AS
FOLLOWS:

𝑃1 𝑃2
= at constant V
𝑇1 𝑇2
What will happen ta a can of paint
spray containing only the propellant at a
pressure of 750 torr at 30° C if it is thrown
into a heap of garbge burning at 165° C ?
Given:
𝑃1 = 750 torr 𝑇1 = 30 ° C +273.15 K
𝑃2 = ? 𝑇1 = 165 ° C +273.15 K
Solution:
𝑇2
𝑃2 = 𝑃1
𝑇1
438.15 𝐾
= 750 torr
303.15 𝐾

= 750 torr (1.45)

𝑷𝟐 = 1,084.00 torr
PRACTICE EXERSICE:
A 15-L container is filled with
gas to a pressure of 2.0 atm at 0 °
C . At what teperature will the
pressure inside the container be
at 2.75 atm?
atm at 25 ° C . What would the pressure be
if the temperature is changed to 30 ° C

A container is filled wih gas to a pressure
of 1.25 atm to 20 ° C.
a. What pressure will develop within the
sealed container if it is heated to 70 ° C?
b. At what temperature would the
pressure be 2.50 atm?
c. At what temperature would the
pressure be 1.00 atm?
AVOGRADRO’S
LAW
Volume-Mole Relationship
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
An Italian chemist Amedeo Avogadro found
out in his experiment the relationship between
the volume abd number of moles of gas. He
proposed the use of counting unit called mole
to represent the amount of gas or number of
particles contained in a substance.
The law states that equal volumes of gases at
the same temperature and pressure contain
equal number of molecules.
EXPRESSED IN A MATHEMATICAL
EQUATION:

𝑉1 𝑉2
=
𝑛1 𝑛2
A 2.7 mole of gas has a volume of 2.9 L
at certain temperature and pressure. Find
the new volume of this gas if 5 moles are
added to the original volume under the
same conditions.
Given:
𝑉1 = 2.9 L 𝑛1 = 2.7 moles
𝑉2 = ? 𝑛1 = 2.7 moles + 5 moles
Solution:
𝑉1 𝑛2
𝑉2 =
𝑛1
2.9 𝐿 7.7 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠
=
2.7 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠

𝑽𝟐 = 8.27 L
PRACTICE EXERSICE:

A balloon containing 2.0 mole of helium

has a volume of 0.8 L. What would the
volume be if 3.5 moles of helium is added
to the balloon?
A 10 g of nitrogen has a volume of2 L.
if the amount of nitrogen is increased to
45 g, what new volume will result if the
pressure and temperature remain
constant?

we increased the number of oxygen
moles by 2, what is the new volume?
