What is Baptism?

role and significance of
sacraments for Christians,
including different forms of
baptism: infant baptism and
believers' baptism.
Key words
Sacraments: rites and rituals through which the believer
receives a special gift of grace.
Baptism: Ritual through which people become members
of the Church; it involves the use of water as a symbol of
the washing away of sins.
Believers' baptism: for people old enough to understand
the ceremony/rite and willing to live a Christian life.
Infant baptism: for babies and younger children;
promises are taken on their behalf by adults; infant is
freed from sin and becomes part of God’s saving love and
gets support from the Christian community.
Jesus was baptised himself by his cousin John and gave this
