ABSTRACT:

-> In this project, the 3D model of Helicopter Rotor

Hub shall be done in CATIA and imported into ANSYS
software to perform static analysis to analyze strength
of Rotor Hub and optimize by using different
materials like steel and aluminum.
Introduction to FEM:
 Finite element method (FEM) is a numerical method for
solving a differential or integral equation.
 It has been applied to a number of physical problems,
where the governing differential equations are available.
 The method essentially consists of assuming the piecewise
continuous function for the solution.
 And obtaining the parameters of the functions in a
manner that reduces the error in the solution.
 The method has gained popularity among both
researchers and practitioners and after so many
developments codes are developed for a wide variety of
problems.
About FEA & FEM:
• In general, there are three phases in any computer-
aided engineering task:
• Pre-processing – defining the finite element model
and environmental factors to be applied to it
• Analysis – solution of finite element model
• Post-processing - of results using visualization tools

Structural analysis:
 The subjects of structural analysis are
engineering artifacts whose integrity is judged
largely based upon their ability to withstand
loads.
 They commonly include buildings, bridges,
aircraft, and ships.
 From a theoretical perspective the primary goal
of structural analysis is the computation of
deformations, internal forces, and stresses.
Material properties for material 1:
 All the components of the Helicopter rotor Hub
is made using Steel, High Strength Alloy ASTM
A-514. All the components of the Helicopter rotor
Hub are assigned as per the below material
properties.
 Steel, High Strength Alloy ASTM A-514
Mechanical Properties:
 Young’s modulus = 210 GPa
 Yield Strength = 690Mpa
 Tensile Strength = 760Mpa
 Density = 7850e kg/m3
 Poison ratio = 0.3
Material properties for material 2:
All the components of the Helicopter rotor Hub are made using
Aluminum alloy IS: 2014-T6 2062-1999, Grade A. All the components of
the Helicopter rotor Hub are assigned as per the below material
properties.

Aluminum alloy 2014-T6Mechanical Properties:

Young’s modulus = 72GPa
Yield Strength = 414Mpa
Tensile Strength = 483Mpa
Density = 2800 kg/m3
Gravitational force = 9810 mm/s
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS:
 In this project design has done using CATIA been validated using finite
element analysis.
 The following analysis were carried out to study the structural integrity
of the “Helicopter Rotor Hub” to identify the maximum stressed
locations under various loading conditions.
 Based on the results some changes were proposed and implemented
on the Rotor hub.
 The comparison of the results for two materials for steel, aluminum
alloy and composites Helicopter rotor Hub is given in the below table.

VONMISES STRESS Maximum

MATERIAL WEIGHT (ton) FOS
(MPa) Deformation

Steel 132 21 0.1 5.2

Aluminum 62 7.5 0.2 6.6

CONCLUSION:
 In this project the Helicopter Rotor Hub has been designed
and optimized to reduce the stresses and deflections.
 Design was developed by CATIA and the same design was
validated using finite element analysis.
 Optimization was also done based on the finite element
analysis results.
 From the finite element analysis results it is concluded that
the optimized Helicopter Rotor Hub safe for the given
operating conditions.
