CAPACITY BUILDING
MATH TEACHING AND LEARNING

Very poor teaching and learning

standards in primary mathematics.
THE PROBLEM
RESULTS IN

High failures in national & international assessments. India ranks

2nd last in PISA tests.

Only 11-20% of Fifth Grade students in 11 Indian states could divide!

This is the shocking situation of mathematics teaching in India
(ASER 2016).

Abysmally low levels of teaching standards especially in the

primary mathematics (NCF 2005).
Develop a highly skilled community of
VISION AND MISSION math educators and students.

Empower educators with the most

innovative ways of learning /
teaching.
Our Solution
The teacher is the fulcrum around which the entire
teaching-learning process revolves. Hence, our program
develops the capacity, skills and knowledge of the
teachers.

Exposure to informal situations for creative thinking.
A simple example will illustrate:
List all possible things that you can do with a fork.
So how many could you list within 90 seconds. Try it and you will
understand. One of the teachers in our session listed 13 ways. Lets
see how many do you list.

1.2. DIVING DEEP INTO

MATHEMATICS
1. What is a number? Can we show it?
2. What is the difference between a fraction and a ratio?
3. Why do we multiply from right to left and divide from left to right?
4. Why do we take LCM of the denominators when adding unlike
fractions?

1. ORIENTATION AND BRAINSTORMING

1.3.FUN BASED
LEARNING
We believe that life only becomes meaningful when we are happy
and loving. We have lost the capacity to laugh. The first step
towards this is to break the seriousness. We take this sincerely and
include the elements that boosts up the energy and make the
participant cheerful and happy. For this we have the dance sessions,
music and creative acts like pottery and art. This takes about 10
percent of the initial time and is also a thread running in all our
sessions.

2. CONCEPTUAL ENGAGEMENT

2.1. NUMBER AND NUMBER STRUCTURE

What is a number and what are the different systems of numerations

and how are they formed. In this the main concept of place value
and way it developed for the child will be discussed.

2.2. NUMBER RELATION AND NUMBER

OPERATION
This is one of the most fundamental areas of concern and we
engage the teachers with the different methods of performing
calculations in a more informed and intuitive manner. The logical
explanation of the operations are also told and this helps to

2. CONCEPTUAL ENGAGEMENT

2.3. FRACTIONS AND THEIR

OPERATIONS
This is the most fundamental area that is mostly a part of our
workshops. What are fractions and how to develop these concepts
is central here.

2.4. OTHER RELATED CONCEPTS

There are many other related concepts that are done which helps in
understanding the above deeply. For example number line,
geometrical shapes pattern making etc.
OUR SOLUTION WORKSHOP OUR SESSIONS

3. PEDAGOGY AND INSTRUCTIONAL

STRATEGY

The trainees undergo a rigorous training about the way the concepts
must be developed. A general sequence is to move from concrete to
abstract. The main elements of this will include the philosophical
considerations of what is knowledge, what is reality to more specific
and concrete steps of how must addition be taught.
OUR SOLUTION WORKSHOP OUR SESSIONS

4. ICT WORKSHOPS

The workshops will train teachers around how they can use ICT in
their classrooms as well as how they can involve students and other
fellow teachers to collaborate and develop new resources digitally.
This would involve training and application of tools like: Presentation,
Docs, Latex, Illustrator, Photoshop, Amaze, E-content, Interactive
Book and many other similar tools.
OUR SOLUTION WORKSHOP OUR SESSIONS

5. PROBLEM SOLVING

This is one of the most important elements of our workshop. We

train teachers to develop the problem solving strategies based on
George Polya’s approach. This includes from the first step of
designing such questions to the steps of writing the strategic steps
and procedure to reach the solution.
