CIM: Computer Integrated Manufacturing
“Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is a management philosophy in which the functions of design and
manufacturing are rationalized and coordinated using computer, communication, and information technologies”*
Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) encompasses the entire range of product development and
manufacturing activities with all the functions being carried out with the help of dedicated software packages.
CIM has the capability to largely or entirely automate flexible manufacturing by coordinating work cells, robots,
automatic storage and retrieval facilities and material handling systems.

CIM includes all activities from the perception of a need for a product; through the conception, design, and
development of the product; and on through production, marketing, and support of the product in use. Every action
involved in these activities uses data, whether textual, graphic, or numeric. The computer, today’s prime tool for
manipulating data, offers the real possibility of integrating the now often fragmented operations of manufacturing
into a single, smoothly operating system. This approach is generally termed computer-integrated manufacturing#.

 Effective utilization of computer technology in the

MANAGEMENT, CONTROL and OPERATIONS of the
manufacturing facility through either direct or indirect
computer interface with the physical and human
resources of the company.

 These are systems enabling data and program

preparation for controlling of NC machines in
automated production of mechanical parts, full
assemblies, electronic circuits, etc, which use
geometry and other data acquired during period of
CAD design.
