How many “arts” are tHere in
“liberal arts”?
• Martianus Capella, a scholar in Late Antiquity,
first came up with the idea of the “SEVEN
ARTS”: Grammar, Dialect, Rhetoric,
Geometry, Music, and Astronomy.
A. Human
Sciences:
– studies the biological,
social and cultural
aspect of human life.
Human sciences aims
to expand our
understanding of the
human world through
a broad
interdisciplinary
approach.
• Human Sciences:
– Would include any classes using scientific ideas,
theories, and/or methods of inquiry to examine
human societies or behavior. More theoretical
courses in Econ and Poli Sci would likely fulfill
this requirement, as of courses in many other
discipline.
– Liberal inquiry must include an examination of the
behavioral and societal framework in which
humans live and work.
B. Natural
sciences
– is a branch of science
concerned with the
description,
prediction, and
understanding of
natural phenomena,
based on
observational and
empirical evidence.
• Natural sciences
– is a thinking process
with the objective of
determining whether
an idea is right or
wrong.
• Moral reasoning
–Major in a department .
–We concur with everyone on the
committee that depth is also a
worthwhile, probably essential, part
of a liberal education.

diversity
– is the quality of
diverse or different
cultures, as opposed
to monoculture, the
global monoculture,
or a homogenization
of cultures, akin to
cultural decay.
• Cultural diversity
– Liberalism is a
political philosophy
or worldview
founded on ideas of
liberty and equality.
• The liberal tradition
– the method of
human
communication,
either spoken or
written, consisting
of the use of
words in a
structured and
conventional way.

– is the ability to
apply
mathematical
skills when
solving real world
problems.

– is defined as any
bodily
movement
produced by
skeletal muscles
that requires
energy
expenditure.
