Components of RPD

(“McCracken” in McGivney & Carr, 2000)

1. Major connectors
2. Minor connectors
3. Rests
4. Direct retiners
5. Stabilizing/reciproqal
component
6. Indirect retainers
7. Base
Major Connectors
Characteristic :
•Rigid
•Support other elements
•Contributes to support the
prosthesis
•Not impinge oral tissue
•Alloy compatible to oral tissue
•Not irritating to tongue
•Not alter natural contour of
lingual or palatal surface
•Not cover more tissue than is
absolutely necessary
•Not contribute to food
retention/trapping
Types of Major Conn.

Mandibular:
- Lingual bar
- Sublingual bar Lingualplate Bar Lingual Bar

- Continuous bar
- Cingulum bar
- Linguoplate bar
- Labial bar Sublingual Bar Continuous Bar / Cingulum Bar

Labial Continuous Labial Bar

Bar
Maxillary Conn. :
- Single palatal bar
- Single palatal strap Single palatal bar
Single palatal
- U-shaped palatal conn. strap

- Anterior-posterior palatal bar

- Anterior-posterior palatar strap
- Palatal plate
U-shaped Palatal Anterior-posterior
Conn. palatal bar

Anterior-posterior
palatal strap Palatal plate
Minor Connectors
Connecting Major C./Base with the other components

Functions:
1. Transfer functional stress to the
abutment teeth
2. Transf.effect of ret., rest, or stabilizing
components to the other denture parts

Form and location:

- Bulk
- Passing vertically
-Tapering toward
contact area
Rest
A rest is a rigid extension of an RPD that contacts a remaining tooth /teeth:
- to dissipate vertical or horizontal forces
- prevent vertical displacement of the denture in gingival direction

Types:
- Occlusal rest
- Onlay rest
- Lingual rest
- Cingulum rest
- Incisal rest
- Internal rest

Occlusal rest
Deepest part of an occlusal rest
preparation should be insife lowered
marginal ridge at X. Marginal ridge
is lowered to provide bulk and lest
occlusal interference
Preparation is rounded,and
triangular concavity has smooth
margins on occlusal service,and
lowered, rounded marginal ridge
Occlusal rest should be spoon
shaped and slightly inclined
apicaly from marginal ridge.
The rest should restore
occlusal morphology of tooth
Extracoronal Direct Retainer
(Clasp)
Clasp is a parts of an RPD that act as direct retainer, stabilizer,
or both, by encircling/contacting abutment tooth

-Support
-Stabilization
-Reciprocation
-Encirclement
-Passivity
-Retention
Intracoronal Direct Retainer
(Precision Attachment)
Bentuk khusus Direct Retainer
Estetik lebih baik
Mahkota gigi harus cukup panjang
Memerlukan restorasi mahkota yg banyak dan komplek
Bagian male pd protesa, bag.famale pd gigi sandaran
Cepat menjadi longgar
Tidak untuk kasus GTSL FreeEnd ungkitan meningkat
(kecuali diberi stress breaker
Mahal; tidak dapat direline/reparasi
