 ABSTRACT
Drilling is the operation of generating or originating a circular hole by removing
the solid material with the help of a revolving multipoint cutting tool called drill.
The hole is drilled to the required depth either by giving an axial movement to
the rotating drill or moving the work piece axially against the drill.
Drilling performed on the specially designed machine called “ Drilling
machine”. Drilling can also be performed on other machine tools such as lathe,
but drilling machine is more effectively adoptable under the wide range of
variable conditions of drilling.
To have such type of drilling operations at number of places
simultaneously using the same drive and saving the power and handling labour,
we are going to design the special purpose” Multi-spindle drilling Machine”.

 PARTS
• It consists of the following components:-
• 1) Drill header plate; - it is the circular plate provided with the 4 slots right angle to
each other for facilitating of the advancement of the individual drill header. It is of mild
steel material. The plate is installed firmly to the drill post.
• 2) Drill header:- there are four individual drill headers which are installed on the
header plate. These individually can reciprocated along the slots. It is individually
driven in the slots with the help of the lead screw and advancing nut arrangement. All
the four drill headers are individually installed separately with the drive pulleys at it’s
top. A common belts runs over all the four pulleys and the motor pulley. To
compensate the change in length, the motor is installed with the help of spring
tension with respect to the firm reference post frame. Due to this arrangement, the
individual drill can be independently advance in the slot as per the required
desrination.
• 3) Motor:- the drive motor is electrically having the following specifications:-
• h.p.:- ¼ h.p., rpm:- 1440. Rating;- continuous, phase:- single, voltage;- 250v A.C.,
current rating:- 5 Amp, air cooled, with 10diameter shaft installed with the drive
pulley.

• 4) Drill Chuck:- every drill header spindle is installed with the individual chuck to hold the drill bit firmly. It self
setting 4-jaw type of chuck. Drills are held in the drill chuck mounted on the drill spindle. Generally drills under ½”°
diameter are having straight shanks. These drills are mounted in the chuck. The chuck is tightened using chuck. If
can operated without key also. This type of chuck is used for holding tools having straight shanks. Three slots are
cut 120Ø apart in the chuck body which houses three jaw & having threads cut at the back that meshes with a ring
nut. The ring nut is attached to the sleeve bevel test cut on its face which meshed with the bevel teeth on the
sleeve. The rotation of the sleeve causes the ring not to rotate in a fixed position and all the three jaws closed &
opened by the same amount from the center closing or releasing the shank of a tool.
• 5) Vertical post:- it is main post over which the drill machine header is installed. It forms the robust support to hold
all the accessories with least vibrations with out affecting the principle functioning of the machine. It is the major
circular pillar-post how bears the complete weight of the machine. It is installed in the base casting and holds the
pulleys housing unit along with the rack-pinion work table arrangement. It is made of mild steel.

• 7) Base:- it is the cast steel base with heavy mass enough to support the vertical post and drill header along with
the drive mechanism. It can be installed on the foundation base or on the secondary base of the table. It is the
foundation part who supports the stand post and complete machine also it support the motor swiveling platform
arrangement along with the motor. It is made of cast-iron its weight is comparatively more to stabilize the machine
firmly.

• 8) Lead screw and Nut:- it is the arrangement made to advance the individual drill header in the slot as per the
required destination. There are four independent arrangements made separately on the individual drill head to
locate the drill to desired destination.
• 9) Table:- it is the sort of fixture used to hold the job firmly when it is being drilled at the required destination by
taking that particular drill header to the drilling position with the help of the handle.
• More than one drill pattern can be placed on a single Multi-Spindle Drill
• Head.

 WORKING
• The job to drilled at different destination is kept on the table and then it is
firmly hold with the help of holding fixture. Require drilling destinations are
marked using steel rule and vernier caliper and marking blue. The points
are marked again with the punch and hammer. The drill is hold in the chuck
using chuck key. The drill should be hold tightly in the chuck. The required
step is selected.
• Every individual header is installed with the appropriate size of drill in the
drill chuck firmly. The common rpm is applied to all the pulleys. The
individual drill header is installed in the every slot using the est strip
arrangement. The main drilling header plate can be raised or lowered on the
pillar post as per the size of the job over the table. The supply is made On
to start the motor. The required header with the prime drill is taken to the
required destination with the help of the handle, nut and lead screw
arrangement. The drill is pressed violently such that the drill will slowly
advance in the work piece. During this to maintain the length of belt
constant, the motor with the help of spring tension arrangement will come
towards and away to compensate the change in length. Gradually the pinion
lever is actuated so that rack is raised along with the worktable and required
feed is given to the rotating drill if more feed is given
