FLOW VISUALISATION 3
INTRODUCTION
Wind tunnels are measurement tools to study gas flows around a body and the
forces generated by the gas-body interaction

Mostly air is used in wind tunnels

Using such tool it is possible to measure global and local flow velocities, as well
as pressure ,temperature and different forces around the body.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Wind tunnel Design
• J.H. Bell and R.D. Mehta (1989) [2] developed the empirical formulas for predicting the boundary
layer growth for small low speed wind tunnel .
• R.D. Mehta(1985) [3]proposed various techniques to counter the turbulent boundary layer growth
in contraction section by using screens and honey comb meshes as flow stabilizers.
• R.D. Mehta and P. Bradshaw (1979) [4] proposed design criteria for designing contraction section
for low speed wind tunnel.
• Contraction ratios, c of between 2- 6 are found to be adequate for most small low speed wind
tunnels. [4]
• Length to diameter ratio for contraction cone is 1.25. [4]

LITERATURE REVIEW contd..
• J.B. Barlow et. al 1999[5] in his text book titled Low-speed wind tunnel testing throws light into
various methods and techniques used for wind tunnel testing.
• Bell and Mehta (1988) [6] have developed a polynomial function that has been proven successful
to design the contraction cone.
• Tide P.S and Aswith R.Shenoy (2013) [7] prosed simplified design process for design of
contraction cone.
• Method [7] uses basic isentropic relations and continuity equation and incorporated the design
rules set by Bell and Mehta to simplify the design of contraction cone design for subsonic wind
tunnels with Mach number less than 0.5.
• This Method [7] is used for designing the contraction cone for our current study.
