Types of Orifice Plates • Concentric Orifice Plates • Eccentric Orifice Plates • Segmental Orifice Plates • Quadrant edge Orifice Plates Concentric Orifice Plate • It is the most widely used • Stainless steel and thickness varies depending on pipe line size and velocity. • Circular hole in middle and installed with hole concentric to pipe • Nickel,Monel,Phosphor bronze-withstand corrosive effects Eccentric Orifice Plate • For liquids containing solid particles that are likely to sediment or for vapors likely to deposit water condensate, this orifice plate is used with its eccentric bore bottom flush with the bottom of the piping inside surface so that the sedimentation of such inclusions are avoided Segmental Orifice Plate • Segmental orifice plates are most useful where there are substantial entrained water or air and also if there are suspension in the fluids. • This avoids build up in front of the orifice plate. • The orifice hole is placed at the bottom for gas service and top for liquids. Quadrant Edge • The inlet edge of the bore of this orifice plate is rounded to a quarter circle. • This orifice plate is usually used for viscous fluids & Reynolds number between 2000 to 10000 Flanges Types of Flanges • Raised Face weld neck • Raised Face Slip on • Ring type joint weld neck • Corner tap flanges Position of Taps in Orifice • Flange Taps • Venacontracta taps • Radius taps • Full flow or pipe taps • Corner taps Orifice Tappings Tapping D1 D2 Remarks Type Pipe taps 2.5D 8D Mainly used for gas lines, when D is small and pressure differential is small,beta<0.70 Radius taps D 0.5D Prescribed to keep the tapping positions fixed irrespective of beta Flange or 1 1 Used mainly for D>1 inch.It is the most popular tapping Corner taps inch inch positions β ratio • It is the ratio between the diameter of the restriction and the inside diameter of the pipe • Most head meters depend on a restriction in the flow path to produce a change in velocity.
