• James Gabriel Wanderson Keogh was born on the
1st December 1987.
• He is a Australian singer and songwriter better
known by his stage name Vance Joy.
• He plays guitar, ukulele, piano and sings.
• His music focuses on the genre indie pop/ indie
folk.
• His song ‘Riptide’ has over 205,000,000 views on
YouTube.
• He signed a five album contract with Atlantic
records in 2013.
• He released his debut studio album (‘Dream Your
Life Away’) in 2014.

• Vance Joy's debut EP 'God Loves You When You're Dancing'
was released in Australia on the 22nd March 2013.
• The EP had been nominated two awards at the ARIA music
awards of 2013 (breakthrough artist/release and best pop
release) but lost.
• The EP contains the five songs: 'Emmylou', 'Riptide', 'Play with
Fire', 'Snaggletooth' and 'From Afar'.

• Dimitri Basil was born on September 5th 1988 in Columbia.
• He is a actor and director.
• He is known for his work in Flight Facilities: Foreign Language
(2011) and Light of a Rusted Landscape (2009).
• Vance has said that Dimitri came up with the idea for the video with
the literal meaning of the lyrics, he has said that he didn’t have much
input.
• Laura Gorun is a actress and director.
• Laura appears in the ‘Riptide’ video as a singer.
• She is known for her work in Flight Facilities: Foreign Language

Vance Joy’s Song ‘Georgia’

• The song is from Vance Joy’s studio album ‘Dream Your Life
Away’ which was released in 2014. The music video has over 7
million views.
• The video was directed by Luci Schroder. Vance worked with
Luci on another of his videos ‘Mess Is Mine’.
• The video does not match the video for ‘Riptide’ as it shows a
story rather than the literal images used in ‘Riptide’.
• In the video the men at the end are presented as a lot more weak
and vulnerable as they are crying which contrasts to the women
who look bored.
• There are no men or women in the video being presented
sexually which is atypical for most music videos.
 ‘Un Chien Andalou’
• 'Un Chien Andalou’ (An Andalusian Dog) is a 1929 surrealist
short film directed by Spanish director Luis Bunuel.
• The chronology of the film is very disjointed and jumps to
different time stamps whilst the characters and event don’t
change very much. It uses dream logic in a narrative flow.
• The dream like logic links to the randomness and similar flow
of ‘Riptide’.
• The short film also uses some graphic and violent images
which links to the more underlying violent images used in
‘Riptide’ for example the hand being stabbed.

• He is a American film director, producer, actor and screen
writer.
• His films are known for their distinctive visual and narrative
styles.
• He has been nominated for many awards and received his first
award in 2014.
• Wes Anderson’s hipster style links to the style of the ‘Riptide’
video.
 Production value
• The seemingly low budget of the video is either a conscious choice or not.
• Some of Joy’s other music videos e.g. ‘Georgia’ have had a larger budget
and special effects which contrasts with the video for ‘Riptide’.
• In the video you can clearly see that the video used a lower budget as
there is a lack of special effects.
• The video for ‘Riptide’ features a lot of literal clips which contrasts to a
story type music video like in Joy’s other videos, for example, ‘Mess is
Mine’ and ‘From Afar’.
