INTRODUCTION:
Sodium stibogluconate is a medication used to treat leishmaniasis. This
includes leishmaniasis of the cutaneous, visceral, and mucosal types.
Sodium stibogluconate has been studied as early as 1937 and has been in
medical use since the 1940s. It is on the
World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and
safe medicines needed in a health system.
Workers in India prepared sodium stibogluconate in the late 1940’s via the
reaction of antimony pentoxide with sodium hydroxide.
