INTRODUCTION:
 Sodium stibogluconate is a medication used to treat leishmaniasis. This
includes leishmaniasis of the cutaneous, visceral, and mucosal types.

 Sodium stibogluconate has been studied as early as 1937 and has been in
medical use since the 1940s. It is on the
World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and
safe medicines needed in a health system.

 It belongs to the class of medicines known as the “Pentavalent antimonials”.

 Workers in India prepared sodium stibogluconate in the late 1940’s via the
reaction of antimony pentoxide with sodium hydroxide.
Synonyms:

 Antimony sodium gluconate

 Myostibin
 Sodium stibogluconate
 Stibanate
 Stibanose
 Stibatin
 Stibinol
 Stibogluconate de sodium
Structure:
Mechanism of action:

 Sodium stibogluconate is a pentavalent antimonial

which is the drug of choice for kala-azar. The exact
mechanism of action and selective toxicity to the
parasite is unclear.

 The drug inhibits the SH group containing enzymes of

parasite & affects the bioenergetics of the parasite.

 It blocks the glycolytic & fatty acid oxidation pathways.
