ELECTRICAL CAPACITY

FACTOR
How is it measured?
Measuring Electrical Power
 Power
 Outputat a given moment in time
 Measured in watts, kilowatts (KW), or megawatts (MW)

 Energy
 Outputover a period of time
 Measured in:
 Watt-hours
 Kilowatt-hours
(KwH)
 Megawatt-hours (MwH)
 Calculated by multiplying power and time
Capacity Factor (CF)
 Comparison of maximum possible to actual
 Maximum
 Calculated by multiplying the rated power by the hours
in a period of time
 Actual
 Calculated by measuring the actual output for a period
of time
 Example: Wind turbine rated at 1 MW
CF = (1 MW x 8760 Hrs) / 2628 MwH = 30%
Typical Capacity Factors
 Wind 30%
 Solar photovoltaic cells 15%
 Coal plant 80%
 Nuclear plant 90%
Wind Power Capacity Factor

 Wind speed is variable

 Energy output is proportional to the cube of the wind
speed
 Example: If the power rating is 1000 KW at 12 mph, the
output is only 125 KW at 6 mph
