HOT WORK
HOT WORK

• Hot Work is defined as

cutting, welding,
soldering and brazing
operations that involve
the use of portable gas
or arc welding
equipment. The use of
these types of
equipment for cutting
and welding can
introduce significant fire
hazards.

PREPARATION PRIOR TO START HOT WORK

• All flammable and combustible materials within a 35-foot radius of hot

work must be removed.
• When flammable and combustible materials within a 35-foot radius of
hot work cannot be removed they must be covered with fire blankets
and a fire watch must be posted.
• Floors and surfaces within a 35-foot radius of the hot work area must
be swept free of combustible dust or debris.
• All openings or cracks in the walls, floors, or ducts that are potential
travel passages for sparks, heat and flames must be covered.
• Have suitable fire extinguishing agents (extinguisher, water, sand,
etc.) ready near cutting and welding operations.
• Obtain a “hot work permit” authorized by the designated responsible
person.

HOT WORK PERMIT

When is a Hot Work Permit Necessary?

• Hot Work Permits are needed for all cutting, welding, soldering and
brazing activities, that are conducted with portable gas or arc
equipment.

WHAT IS A HOT WORK PERMIT?

PURPOSE
• The Hot Work Permit system is intended to assure that the individuals
involved in construction, renovation, repairs and maintenance activities
are aware of the hazards associated with hot work and welding and that
they implement control measures to help mitigate them.

HOT WORK PERMIT

• The Hot Work Permit is the means by which the departments of

Facilities Management, Facilities Planning and Construction, and the
department of Environmental Health & Safety & Risk Management
Services will be able to keep track of construction activities that involve
hot work, and that these activities are being conducted safely.
• The hot work permit also provides a step-by-step check list for hot work
fire safety and serves as a reminder to contractors of their fire
prevention responsibilities before, during, and after any hot work is
conducted.

HOT WORK PERMIT
What is the process for obtaining a Hot Work Permit?

• A Hot Work Operator determines a need for hot work.

• The Hot Work Operator ensures the area around hot work activities is in
compliance with the safety requirements of the Hot Work Permit.
• The Hot Work Operator contacts a Permit Authorizing Individual.
• The Permit Authorizing Individual inspects the hot work site
and completes the Hot Work Permit Form.
• The Permit Authorizing Individual posts a Fire Watch
if the situation requires one.
• Once all permit safety guidelines are satisfied, the
Permit Authorizing Individual signs and posts the permit.
• The Hot Work Operator can then begin hot work.

• Areas near large quantities of readily-ignitable materials, such as

baled paper or cotton.

• Sprinkler-equipped buildings while sprinklers are impaired or out of

order.

• The presence of explosive atmospheres such as unclean or improperly-

prepared tanks.

• Protect welding leads from damage by vehicles, slag, etc.

• Designate a responsible individual to authorize hot work permits.

• Insist that cutters/welders are trained in safe work habits for their
specific tasks.

• Advise all contractors about flammable or hazardous materials.
