Project :Construction of New High Level Bridge Across River Damanganga
at Gunsa-Bildhari Villages, Nr. Old Jetty, Silvassa.

Consultancy: DELF Consulting Engineers (India) Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad.

Name of Client: M/s. DELF Consulting Engineers (India) Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad

Project No.:140657

Month: June 2014

Structure: High Level Bridge

4 Introduction
 The area of Bildhari, Gunsa, and Dudhani etc. are
habituated by tribal peoples meeting their lively hood from
the agriculture activities. However people of Bildhari &
Gunsa are dependent on Dudhani for their other
requirements.
 Presently, the connectivity between Bildhari / Gunsa and
Ghodbari is obstructed due to Damanganga River in
between which causes great inconvenience to the people
GUNSA/BILDHARI

particularly in emergency situation creating embarrassing

situation.
 People are facing problems for daily needs, transportation,
education, medical problems etc when the river is full with GHODBARI

dam water or is in flood. The water depth varies 10’ to 60’. It

is very difficult for local people to cross the river.
5 Objective
 The objective of study is to bore hole data & finding out the
Safe Bearing Capacity of soil. Also compute the pile capacity.

 To provide structural layout/arrangement which will meet the

functional requirement abiding the best work practice in most
safe &economical way.
6 PROPOSED LOCATION:
 The probable alignment considering the existing road network,
convenience of people of Gunsa and Bildhari village separately &
jointly the two alternative alignments seems to be possible as shown
in the sketch below.
7 ALIGNMENT CONSIDERED FOR BRIDGE

 ALIGNMENT 1: This alignment is just downstream of the existing ferry

service jetty.

 ALIGNMENT 2: This alignment is just near the abandoned jetty

behind the habitant area.
8 ALIGNMENT 1
 As seen from the survey data the total length to be bridged is about
700m.
 Even if second gorge is to be filled up the height of embankment
will be about 15m and length will be 160m which is problematic &
difficult.
 The road connectivity toward other side is available at short
distance but toward Ghodbari side it is 100m away.
 The total length of bridge will be about 520m with approach length
of 140m towards Ghodbari side and 50m towards other side.
 The approximate cost of the bridge will be about 520 x 10.5x 65000
= 38cr + approaches will be about 215 x 10.5 x 10000 = 2.50 cr.
Hence total cost of the bridge is 40.50Cr.
9 ALIGNMENT 2
 As seen from the survey data the total length to be bridged is about
500m.
 Approach embankment height will comparatively low about 8 to 9
m.
 The road connectivity toward both sides is available at short
distance.
 The total length of bridge will be about 320m with approach length
of 79m towards Ghodbari side and 100m towards other side
 The approximate cost of the bridge will be about 320 x 10.5x 65000
= 22Cr +approaches will be about 186 x 10.5 x 10000 = 2.00 Cr.
Hence total cost of the bridge is 24.00 Cr.
10 Conclusion and Proposition

 From the parameters mentioned above it can be seen that

alignment 2 is best techno economical alignment for this bridge
and hence it is recommended. The further hydraulic calculations
are done for this alignment.

21 CONCLUTION
 For Abutment Retaining walls, the soil bearing capacity is to be considered
as various variant of depth & size of foundation. This calculation is based on
the properties of soil as FDD=15.82kN/m3, water content ≈22% & shear
parameters c=20.86kN/m2 & ϕ = 19o & the load will be govern by shear
failure only, the net safe bearing capacity (SBC) for the foundation is
recommended as 20.00t/m2 (196.00 kN/m2) with a factor of safety 3.

 Pile diameter with 1500mm gave batter pile capacity as compare to

1200mm diameter.

 Foundation depth should be taken minimum 1.00m below firm rock surface.

 As the depth of foundation is in the firm rock surface, there will be less
effect of scour.
