SELF INFLATING TYRE

SYSTEM
……tire system for future
Introduction 2

 Tires lose air through normal driving (especially after hitting

pot holes) and seasonal changes in temperatures resulting in
under-inflation
 Under-inflation is bad for tyres because it results in wear of tyre
threads ,affects the handling of cars and is generally unsafe.
 The Self inflating tires is designed to inflate or deflate tires
automatically.
 Tires need more air while driving on hard surfaces at high
speeds and less air for driving on soft surfaces such as soil or
sand.

Different Tire Pressure
4
PRINCIPLE OF SIT

Detect whether the air pressure in a particular tyre has

dropped using suitable pressure sensors and give the input
to electronic control unit (ECU)
ECU controls the pneumatic system consisting up of
control valves , air source and hose-pipes
To compensate the pressure loss by inflating that tire
back to the proper level thereby maintaining correct air
pressure
This entire process can be automated
PARTS OF SELF-INFLATING SYSTEM

 Regulator Valve : used to control the rate of air flow to

the tires
 PRESSURE SENORS :They are used to sense the
pressure based on the deformation caused to the tires
 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT: It is the
microprocessor device that controls the entire system
 AIR TANK: It supplies the required amount of air at
suitable pressure with the help of pressure valve
 HOSE PIPES :They help in the transfer of air from the
air tank to the particular tyres

Types Of Self Inflating Tires 6
System
 MTIS( Meritor Tire Inflation System)
 CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System)
 TMS (Tyre Maintenance System)

Wheel-End Assembly
Meritor Tire Inflation System

1. When a tire loses pressure, due to a

puncture or other seepage, a series of
check valves automatically detects it.
2. The System then immediately draws
air from the vehicle’s pneumatic system
and directs it to each tire requiring air.
3. The air pressure is delivered via the
trailer’s hollow axle housing.
4. The air then goes through the hub
assembly and into the tires. It is
completely isolated from the brake
system

7
CTIS 8

 A wheel valve is present which isolate the

tire from the system when it's not in use.

 An electronic control unit (ECU), the

brain of the system is mounted behind
the passenger seat.

 An operator control panel let customize

tire pressure model.

 CTIS includes a speed sensor provide

information about current speed & in
turn CTIS maintain the optimum tire
pressure.
TIRE MAINTENANCE SYSTEM
(TMS)

 Similar to CTIS
 It notifies the driver via
warning light(visible in
rear mirror).
 After every 10 min. or
time period specified
system check the tire
pressure.

PROs & CONs Of SIT
10

ADVANTAGES:
SAFETY

FUEL ECONOMY
TIRE LONGEVITY
DRIVING COMFORTNESS
LESS MAINTENANCE

DISADVANTAGES:
More costly than the conventional tires..
Heavier than conventional tires.
The user must have the basic know how of the relation between the
pressure and road condition.
APPLICATIONS 11

Military Vehicles
Passenger Vehicles
Trucks
Ambulances
Fire Trucks

Conclusion

 Increases safety, comfort and fuel economy

 Flexibility for drivers
 Future tires
 Better option to reduce road accidents
