What is an
annotated
Bibliography?
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

• An annotated bibliography gives an account of the


research that has been done on a given topic.

• It provides a concise summary of each source and


some assessment of its value or relevance.

• An annotated bibliography may be one stage in a


larger research project, or it may be an independent
project standing on its own.
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
An annotated bibliography must be:

• a competently written paragraph that is free of


plagiarism

• a well paraphrased paragraph that displays both


content and grammatical accuracy

• an eloquently written paragraph that contains a wide


range of sentence structures and vocabulary
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
When writing an annotated bibliography, the following
four (4) elements need to be included:

1. Correct reference and in-text citations based on


APA format
2. An introduction
3. The main ideas in the article
4. A critical response based on the author’s
element.

1. REFERENCE:

 Based on APA guidelines

 Include citation of sources/ author’s


detail/publication detail

 Include correct in-text citations

2. AN INTRODUCTION

• Overview / Objective of the article


(e.g. This article written by …deals with …/The
objective of the article is to inform readers /to
persuade the general public to …)

Type of Article
(e.g. newspaper article/journal article/ magazine
article etc.)

(3)MAIN IDEAS

•Identify the main ideas from the article

• Summarise the main ideas in the given


article

•Paraphrase all summarised main ideas


extracted from the article

(4) CRITICAL RESPONSE

 target readership(e.g. general public/


parents/college students etc.

 author’s use of other resources/ in-text


citation/currency of research (e.g.
whether sources used are current/below
10 years)

 organisation of the article (e.g. whether


logical / appropriate supporting resources
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
 reasoning (e.g. objective/biased because the
author provides adequate / inadequate
support )

 author’s tone (e.g. matter-of-


fact/neutral/angry/critical/optimistic/serious
etc.)

 author’s use of language (e.g. technical/reader-


friendly /clear / ambiguous, free of jargon etc.)
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
• usefulness of the article (e.g. provides an/new insight(s)
into the issue / does not provide any insights into the
problem of ... etc.)

• strength of the article (e.g. the author provides a variety


of strong support such as research findings, expert
testimonies or expert opinions etc.)

• weakness /limitation(s) of the article (e.g. the author


provides only his personal opinion and does not provide
external support for his argument etc.)

( Other appropriate responses are accepted)
