PLASTIC BOTTLE IN ENGINEERING BRICK
INTRODUCTION
 Plastic-based products are getting more demand in many industries to
produce their own product. Apart from that, the disposal of plastic is also
getting serious and there are still no solutions yet to cope with this matter.
 So, it is essential for us to find and search for new alternatives to reuse
plastics in a good way to prevent the environment from pollution.
 Plastic bottles need a large portion of area to undergo decomposition
which means a larger site or landfill is needed. However, the price for
gaining a property is way too expensive and because of that, the
construction of landfills is very low.
 Plastic bottles are recommended to be reuse rather than been thrown
away or disposed.
 Recyclable materials can be used in many industries to produce something
new with new and various functions as well as saving the energy.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The use of plastic bottles with widely and increasingly in the market
causing disposal of plastic bottles that have been used in large
quantities also increased. It creates the problem of disposing waste
plastic bottles.
 One factor that plastic bottles are difficult to eliminate because
plastic is not biodegradable and durable. Thus causing the plastic
cannot decompose naturally such as paper and others organic.
 The elimination of plastic bottles using incinerator machine will
cause environmental pollution by carbon emissions that come
from burning plastic bottles. The emission of harmful gases such as
carbon from burning plastic bottles will cause air pollution and
depletion of ozone layer if it is not filtered before being emitted.
This process is more expensive than recycling process and also
uneconomic.
OBJECTIVE
 To determine and compare the compressive and flexural strength of
normal engineering brick with engineering brick made of plastic bottle filled
with compacted sand.
 Study the effects of plastic bottle arrangement on engineering brick
compressive and flexural strength.
 Reduce usage of aggregate in concrete.

MATERIALS AND METHOD
MATERIALS
 Portland cement
 500mL plastic bottles
 Sand
 Water
 Formwork
 Iron rod
METHOD
 Use 1:2:4 the water cement ratio.
 The formwork are prepared before to make the
concrete.
 Plastic bottles are filled with the sand and
compacted using iron rod.
 Preparation to do concrete started by using drum
mixer.
 The mixture poured into the formwork with three
layers and compressed using steel rod as 25 times.
 The size of sample engineering bricks is 400mm x
215mm x 100mm.

CONCLUSION
 The application of plastic bottles filled with sand as
retaining wall or other wall structures to replace bricks
and engineering bricks in the construction industry is
acceptable as the strength is over the minimum
permissible strength of British Standard and the flexural
strength according to ASTM 293.
 The plastic bottle have the ability to replace standard
engineering bricks in Malaysia’s buildings in the terms of
saving budget and conserve the natural environment.
 Bottle bricks also have lower density than the standard
engineering bricks.
