Category B

Butterfly Valve either Concentric or Eccentric, these valve may have a seat
rating less than body rating. Within this category, they are separated based
on connection type as follow:-
a) For Wafer and Lug Type with Class 150, 300, and 600, sizes covered are
NPS 3 to NPS 24.

Category B

b) For double Flanged long pattern,

Class 600, sizes covered are NPS 3 to
NPS 24.

Valve Rating

Valves shall have a pressure-temperature rating or cold working pressure


rating for Category A valves that is the lesser of its shell rating, seat rating, or
differential pressure rating.

Category A
valve bodies and related pressure
boundary elements shall have the
cold working pressure (CWP) rating
assigned by the manufacturer.

Valve Rating

Category B
valve bodies and related pressure
boundary elements shall have the
pressure-temperature rating as listed in
one of the following standards according
to the valve body material:
a) For ductile iron, ASME B16.42
b) For cast copper alloys, ASME
B16.24.
c) For steel, nickel alloy, or special
alloy material, ASME B16.34
(Standard Class).

Seat Rating

For Category B valves the valve seat


ratings for PTFE and RPTFE shall be at
least equal to those listed in Table 3.
For seating materials not listed in Table
3, seat ratings shall be agreed upon by
the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Valve Design

Valves manufactured in accordance with


standard API 609 shall meet the
requirements of ASME B16.34.

Valve Body
The minimum body-wall thickness shall
comply with the applicable ASME B16
standard listed in Section 2 based on the
body material.

Fire Tested Valve


If the purchaser specifies fire tested
valves, the valves shall be certified to
have been tested to, and met, all of the
performance requirements of API
Standard 607.

Valve Design

Lockable Device
When specified in the purchase order,
valves shall be furnished with a lockable
device that accepts a purchaser-
supplied lock that enables the valve to
be locked in both the open and closed
positions.

Fire Tested Valve


If the purchaser specifies fire tested
valves, the valves shall be certified to
have been tested to, and met, all of the
performance requirements of API
Standard 607.

Valve Material

Body Material
The bodies of double flanged, lug- and
wafer-type butterfly valves shall be
made of a material conforming to a
purchaser selected material specification
in accordance with the applicable ASME
standard listed in Section 2.

Trim Material
All wetted materials shall be the
manufacturer standard unless the
purchaser specifies otherwise. Trim is
defined as the seating surfaces and trim
shall not be welded.

All wetted materials shall be the
manufacturer standard unless the
purchaser specifies otherwise. Trim is
defined as the seating surfaces of the
body, disc, disc to shaft connection
hardware (e.g., keys, pins, screws, etc.)
and any internal fasteners that are in
contact with the process fluid. Trim shall
not be welded.

Packing & Shaft Seal Material


Packing or shaft seal materials shall be
suitable for the specified service at the
valve pressure-temperature rating and
shall be the manufacturer choice, unless
otherwise specified in the purchase
order.

Gland Bolt Material


Gland bolts shall be at least intermediate
strength as defined in ASME B16.5.

Examination, Inspection and Testing

Examination
The manufacturer shall examine all
valves as specified in API Standard 598.

Inspection
If inspection by the purchaser is
specified in the purchase order and a
detailed procedure is not included,
inspection shall be in accordance with
API Standard 598. If inspection is not
specified in the purchase order, the
valve shall be capable of meeting the
inspection requirements described in
API Standard 598..

Examination, Inspection and Testing

Pressure Test
Each valve shall be pressure tested as
specified in API Standard 598.

Repair of Defect
When examination, inspection, or testing
reveals defects in the body of a steel or
alloy valve, the defects shall be repaired
by the ASTM standard specified in the
purchase order. If none is specified, the
defects may be repaired as permitted
by the most applicable ASTM material
specification listed in Table 1 of ASME
B16.34.

Marking
Category B valves of steel, nickel alloy,
or special alloy shall be marked in
accordance with the requirements of
ASME B16.34. All other butterfly valves
shall be marked in accordance with MS
SSP-25.

Marking
A nameplate shall be attached to a steel or
alloy body by welding or with pins made of a
material similar to that permitted for the
nameplate. For other valve body materials a
nameplate shall be attached to the body by
suitable pins. The nameplate shall be made
of stainless steel or nickel alloy and shall
include the following information:

a) Manufacturer name.
b) Catalog reference number.
c) Size (NPS).
d) ASME body pressure class for Category B
valves).
e) Pressure at 100 F (38 C).
f) Pressure and temperature at maximum
allowable temperature as may be determined
by other than the shell rating.

General

This standard establish minimum requirement


for rubber seated butterfly valve 3 inch (75
mm) diameter through 72 inch (1800 mm) in
diameter, with various body and end type for
fresh water having pH range from 6-12 and
temperature range from 33 Deg F – 125 Deg F
(0.6 Deg C – 52 Deg C) that suitable for fresh
water service.

Valves described in this standard are provided


by body types and in classes as follow:-

a) Wafer Types, Class 150 in size 3 – 20 inch


(75 mm – 500 mm)
b) Short body and long body flanged valves,

Valve Design

Laying Length
Laying Length for Class 25, 75, 50 flanged and
wafer valves and Class 250 ductile iron valves
with class 125 flanges shall be specified in
Table 1.

Shell Thickness
Minimum body shell thickness shall conform to
requirements listed in Table 1.

End Flanges
For the dimension, Flanges shall be Flat face.
Unless other specified, the dimensions and
drilling of valve flanges shall conform to Table
2 for flange end valve

Valve Shaft
Each valve shall have a one piece shaft
extending completely through the valve disc or
have a stub shaft arrangement and valve shaft
shall have minimum diameter extending
through the valve bearings and into the vave
disc, as specified in Table 3.

Valve Shaft Material shall be stainless steel or
higher

Valve Disc
Valve disc shall be gray iron, cast steel,
bronze, alloy gray iron, ductile iron and
stainless steel.

Testing

Test Pressure
Test Pressure that conform for this standard
shall follow:-
a) Minimum 1 mins for valve 8 inch (200 mm)
and smaller
b) Minimum of 5 mins for valve 20 inch (500
mm) and smaller
c) Minimum 10 mins for valve 24 inch (600
mm) and larger

During test period, there shall be no indication


of leakage and allow visual examination for
leakage.

Marking

Marking Requirement
Marking requirement shall be cast on the body
or provided on a corrosion resistant plate.

Size
Minimum size on cast letter shall be ¼ inch
(6.35 mm) for 3 inch (75 mm) through 12 inch
(300 mm) valves and ½ inch (12.7 mm) for
larger valves. Corrosion resistant plates shall
have minimum 1/8 inch (3.18 mm) size.

Cold Working Pressure

Cold Working pressure defines The maximum working pressure (pounds per
square inch) at which a valve can be operated. The maximum working
pressures for various pressure classes within temperature limits,-20°F to
+100°F or -28 °C to +37 °C

2nd offset
First Offset
The first offset is between the center of
stem and the center of the seat. This off-
set puts the stem behind the sealing
surface for gradual disc engagement
when the disc moves in and out of the
seat. This action prevents cutting or
pinching of the seat.

Second Offset
The second offset is between the center of
the valve and the center of the stem. This
offset allows the disc to swing free of the
seat in the open position. This procentric
action reduces seat wear, and minimizes
seating torque to create an eccentric
seating action for high cycle applications.
