Research

Background research shows that women

tend to perform better on memory tests.

Thought to be because women have longer

attention span and concentration.

Does the same apply for students who

attend EMHS?
Research Question

Do junior females perform better on short term memory

tests than males who attend East Meadow High School?
Hypotheses

 Ho: Male and female junior students at EMHS perform equally well of short
term memory tests.

µf-= µm

 Ha: Females perform better than males in short term memory tests.

µf-> µm
Data Collection Method

 Individuals were first given specific instructions on how the test would
work.

 Subjects had 30 seconds to read the words presented to them.

 After the 30 seconds, they received an additional minute to write

down the words they remembered.

 Sixty four men and women were chosen in total (32 males, 32
females)

 Two Sample T-Test would be performed.

Data Analysis

Women have less spread.

Women have lowest score
of 5.

Men have greater spread,

with lowest score being a
3.

Two Sample T-Test

Conditions were all met (SRS, Normality according to CLT, 10% condition).

𝑥1ҧ − 𝑥ҧ2 7.46875 − 6.84375

T = 1.72525867895

for females.𝑥ҧ2 , 𝑠2 , 𝑛2 are

P(x<1.72525867895)= 0.044761108536
variables used for males.
Conclusion

Since the alpha is less than the alpha of .05, we can reject
the null hypothesis.
There is sufficient evidence to show that the female
population of East Meadow High School students perform
better on short term memory tests than males.
