INTRODUCTION

• Unauthorized waste dumping poses great

threat to environment. If we could identify
the sites most vulnerable to waste
dumping we could report it to authorities
concerned.
• Proposal of an alternative solution for this
issue like land filling sites or incineration
plants.
OBJECTIVES

• To collect the data from offices concerned.

• To find out the sites most vulnerable to waste
disposal.
• To propose an alternative site for scientific
treatment of wastes.
• To make the authorities concerned aware of
this issue and submitting our solution to
them.
METHODOLOGY
The methodology consists of 6 steps:
1. Collecting the data about the required themes
from town planning office.
2. Making maps of each theme s from shape files.
3. In the map finally made provide offset for buffer
zones* as per standards adopted by central
pollution control board.
4. For deciding the importance rank of buffer zones
we use AHP(Analytical Hierarchical Procedure)*.
5. Then incorporate the buffers and importance rank
obtained from AHP to the selected criterion and
do weightage overlay process* to the themes.
6. In the final overlay map so obtained we can
separately see the suitability of sites.

The criterion for buffering are :

• Environmentally sensitive and agricultural
zone
• Residential zone
• Residential cum commercial zone
• Commercial zone
• Road network
• Water body
• Tourist promotion areas
Key words :
• Shape file : It is a geospatial vector data
format for GIS software it can be of polygon,
line or dots type.
• Buffer zones meaning : It is generally a
zonal area that lies between two or more
areas.
• AHP: It is a structural technique for
organizing and analyzing complex decisions
based on mathematics and psychology.
• Weightage overlay : A process in QGIS
which will output the suitability of sites in
maps
• STUDY AREA
– Kannur municipality
• Lies between: lattitude-11˚52’ north
longitude-75˚21’ east
• Population 56823 as per 2016

• AHP(Analytic hierarchy process)
• Structural technique
• for organizing and analyzing complex decisions
based on mathematics and psychology.
• For knowing the percentage of importance of
selected criterion.
• Decision making in fields for AHP such as
– Government,
– Business
– Industry
– Healthcare
– Shipbuilding and education.
• GIS(GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
SYSTEM)
– System designed to store capture
manipulate analysis geographic data

• SOFTWARE
– QGIS-QUANTUM GIS
– Used to complement the display and
processing of data
AHP PROCEDURE
• Define objective
• Structural elements in
criteria,subcriteria,alternatives etc.
• Pair wise comparison of elements in each
group
• Calculate weighting.
• Evaluate the alternatives.
