 WHEN DID THIS WAR START AND WHAT
PARTIES ARE INVOLVED?
• Protests and the uprising began in March 2011.
• The war is between the government and rebels. There
are many rebel groups. ISIS is one. (They want power
and have killed many that oppose what they believe is
true)
• The President, Bashar al-Assad, took over when his
dad died. His family has been in power for almost 50
years. Many dislike him because of his poor ruling
choices and dictatorship.

 WHAT IS THE MOST RECENT
DESTRUCTIVE NEWS?
• ISIS is destroying
monuments that have
stood for thousands of
years
• Many churches and
cities are also being
destroyed
• A long term drought has
set in.
 WHAT ARE THE CASUALTIES?
• 230,000+ people have died so far
• 20,000 deaths of children so far
• 148 people died just on September 4th, 2015
• In August 2015, 2040 individuals were killed
• 40% of the dead are women and children

 WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE
REFUGEES?
• Nearly 7.6 million have been displaced because of the
war. That is 1/3 of the population.
• There are 3 million refugees who have left Syria.
• Many are being put into huge camps in the
surrounding countries. Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon
have taken the most.
• One million or more refugees are making their way into
Europe right now. It’s the largest migration of humans
since World War II.

 WHAT IS THE USA DOING TO HELP?
• The US was trying not to get to involved in this war
directly. Why? Because we just finished one war in
Iraq, it was hugely expensive in American lives lost
and monetarily.
• The president has announced that we are going to
take in 10,000 refugees.
• Hopefully we will consider taking in more refugees in
the future.
