Todd Oldham
He is a fashion designer who also
works with photography. He takes
picture of things he sees around the
world or uses images from
magazines or books and using a
process called Sublimation Printing
to transfer those images onto
fabric. He is also an author of a few
books and is very passionate about
nature, color and the natural
patterns around him.
Todd’s show “All of Everything: Todd Oldham
Fashion” celebrates the beauty of bringing
together collage and pattern. He worked with
Rhode House School of Design to create this
dress that shows just those things and
collaboration can create a beautiful work.

Fourth Grade
One 50 Minute Class
Period
Rationale:
At a fourth grade level, students should already know what a pattern is and how to execute one. Students may know
about fashion design and different clothing brands but we want to expand upon this. Fashion and clothing is a part of
everyday life so it can be overlooked as an art form. This is the same with found objects, they can be overlooked when in
reality, they can be turned into something amazing. Todd Oldham uses photography of found objects and trash and turns
them into fashion.Using him as an inspiration for this lesson, we will combined these two aspects to create a work of art.
We want the students to be able to look past these everyday things and reconsider them as art. Art is such a hard thing to
categorize because it can manifest itself in many ways. As a fourth grade student, we want to begin expanding their
definition of art and have them consider things they might not have without this.
Working with pattern and color, the students will each make a multimedia collage onto a puzzle piece. When they are
done we will assemble the puzzle to form one large T-shirt. The students will be able to see how their pattern works or
clashes with other students puzzle pieces to create one large product. This will teach the students about a relevant artist as
well as getting them to see the bigger picture beyond just their puzzle piece.

Central Focus
Collaging is a fantastic form of art that can be used in so many ways. It takes creativity to put together pictures and
patterns to create a new image. They will have to use many elements of design to create a product that is cohesive
and flows as a new work of art. There is no right or wrong way to collage and that is why it is such a great activity for
young artists. Building confidence is a huge step to inspire students to continue to pursue and invest in art.
