PRESENT UNREAL SUBJUNCTIVE It’s a wish that is opposite with the fact in the present time. We can use the “wish”, “would rather”, “as if ” or “as though” and “if only”. Examples: - WISH S1+wish + S2 + V2/were * I wish I were not a popular person. Means: I am a popular person. * He wishes his secretary came to the meeting. Means: His secretary doesn’t come to the meeting. - WOULD RATHER S1 + would rather + S2 + V2/were * I would rather it rained today. Means: It doesn’t rain today. present • He’d rather she were his girlfriend. Means: She is not his girlfriend. - AS IF / AS THOUGH S1+ V1+as if/as though+S2+V2/were * Lanny speaks as if she were married. Means: She is not married. present * Pino acts as though he could speak French well. Means: Pino can not /doesn’t speak French well. If only If only + S + V2/were • If only I knew him. Mean: I don’t know him. present If only I were you, I would take his offer to be a movie star. Mean: I am not you so I do not take his offer to be a movie star. Means: She ever met him. past tense • I wished he had been graduated last year. • Means: He wasn’t graduated last year. - WOULD RATHER S1+would rather+S2+hadV3/been * I would rather I had learned Japanese or French. Means: I didn’t learn Japanese or French. past tense • I’d rather he had got the first place. • Means: He didn’t get the first place. - AS IF / AS THOUGH S+V2+as if / as though+S2+had V3/been * Socy talked as if she had known a lot about car. Means: She didn’t know a lot about car. * Boni behaved as though he had bought a new car. Means: He didn’t buy a new car. - IF ONLYIf only+S+had V3/been, S+would/could+have+V3 - If only I had known that the countryman was a cruel man, I would have left him.
