The drain to be crossed may be small or like a river. In all cases
correct assessment of maximum flood or peak flow of a drain
should be obtained beforehand.

Once the waterway discharge and velocity are fixed the depth of
flow may be obtained easily. There should be sufficient headway
or clearance left between the HFL and the bottom of the canal
bed. A clearance of 1 m or half the height of the culvert,
whichever is less would be sufficient. Hence, Height of opening =
Depth of flow + Clearance or headway.
After determining the total length of an aqueduct between the
abutments number of spans to be provided may be fixed on
the basis of the following two considerations:
