OK Computer (1997)

● Marked the band’s first foray into experimenting with

electronic sounds/manipulations
● Consciously moved away from guitar-and-drum driven music
● Unexpected reception
● Won 1998 Grammy for Best Alternative Album
● Nominated for Grammy’s Album of the Year
“No Surprises” (OK Computer, 1997)
● Mixes a heavy lyrical theme with a light, breezy melody
● Yorke describes the song as telling the story of “someone who’s trying to keep it
together, but can’t”
● The frothy melody was inspired by The Beach Boys “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and
Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World”
● The band wanted the song to have a slower tempo than what they could actually,
feasibly play, so they recorded it with a fast tempo, then slowed the playback
down for Thom to overdub the lyrics onto, creating an ethereal sound

Time Magazine on Kid A: it’s the “opposite of easy listening, and the weirdest
album to ever sell a million copies, but it’s also a testament to just how
complicated a rock album can be.”
