INTRODUCTION

• Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies

(e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This
form of environmental degradation occurs when
pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into
water bodies without adequate treatment to remove
harmful compounds.
• This results in the Eutrophication.
• Eutrophication is the nutrient enrichment of the water
bodies that stimulate the growth of aquatic plant life
usually resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen.
MECHANISM
 Causes
• The most common nutrients causing eutrophication are
nitrogen and phosphorus.
• The main source of nitrogen pollutants is run-off from
agricultural land, whereas most phosphorus pollutants
comes from households and industry, including
phosphorus-based detergents.
• Disposing of Ritual Materials.
• Oil Seepage and Agricultural Pollutants.
• Disposal of Untreated Sewage.
 Consequences

• Oxygen depletion, or hypoxia, is a common effect of

eutrophication in water.
• The direct effects of hypoxia include fish kills, especially
the death of fish that need high levels of dissolved
oxygen.
• Changes in fish communities may have an impact on the
whole aquatic ecosystem and may deplete fish stocks.
 Ecological effects
• Increased biomass of phytoplankton.
• Increases in blooms of gelatinous zooplankton.
• Increased biomass.
• Decreases in water transparency (increased turbidity).
• Color, smell, and water treatment problems.
• Dissolved oxygen depletion.
• Increased incidences of fish kills.
• Loss of desirable fish species.
• Reductions in harvestable fish and shellfish.
• Decreases in perceived aesthetic value of the water
body.

Floating island
• A constructed wetland bed is a natural treatment
system that does not need energy or chemicals to
clean wastewater.

 Future Plans

We are planning to have a proposal for funding

to this project by Government of India for making
more no of floating islands in the water bodies so
that the water bodies and wet lands which are
undergoing eutrophication and polluted by waste
disposal can the renewed and biodiversity of that
area can be conserved.
 RESULT
We can concluded that lot of projects and
awareness programmes should be initiated by
the government in order to overcome this
malady as there is increasing use of various non
biodegradable materials which are finally
dumped into rivers.
