ADVOCACY PRESENTATION: BULLYING

• Definition: This is an unwanted, aggressive behavior among children that

involves a real or perceived power imbalance. This behaviour is repetitive or can
occur more than once. Bullying happens in three ways, verbal, social and
physical. Bullying can happen during school and after school hours. There are
also a huge percentage that happens on the playground and on the bus. The
bullied and the bully may have serious and lasting problems.

• Connection to ECE Field: As ECEs our job is to provide direction and support
required for the intervention and prevention of this social justice issue in
accordance with the Education Act. By identifying and analysing the causes, we
are sure to provide children and their families the opportunities to learn and
develop in a safe, inclusive and accepting learning environment. This will also aid
us as educators to support the children to achieve their academic goal
successfully. (Bullying Prevention and Intervention – Policy/program
Memorandum No.144)

BULLYING

Summary
Children are the most vulnerable in times of crisis, helping and protecting their
emotional wellbeing as well as physical safety is the number one concern for early
childhood educators. From my research on this topic, advocating for children who
are being bullied in one way or the other in the society is an ethical and
professional responsibility for early childhood educators “Code of Ethics and
Standard of practice”. Both the bullied and the bully may have serious and lasting
problems. As such it is our role to support their future at this early years by taking
action and bringing them to the forefront of their agenda.
Question: How can we distinguish between bullying and normal conflict between
peers? Maureen
BULLYING

Someone who is experiencing or have experienced bullying is very unpleasant and

burdensome. This act carries a pessimistic effect on physical, mental, social and
self-perception that can persist across the school years. After researching the
causes it is important to identify the cause of bullying, for this will support me to
know the strategies for handling this issue.
Barriers- From my research on this topic, I am aware that children, parents and
faculties are suppose to collaborate in order to better handle bullying. With
adequate guidance and support and priority policies to address the need are all
fsctors to take into consideration to prevent and stop bullying.
How do we identify bullying from aggression? Joanne
BULLYING
Through the research I have learned that bullies tend to pick on the weakest people
around them. People can get bullied for different reasons such as, race, religion,
sexuality, skin color and sometimes for no reason at all. Bullying has been one of
the major problem not just in Canada but around the world for generations. Bullying
behaviors can start as early as 2 years old and that a child does not mysteriously
become a bully. As children enter early childhood settings, the bring with them a
history of experiences they have with their parents, siblings, other children around
them, and the media. ECE’s and other educators play an important role in deciding
on how to overcome these situations among children. Knowing exactly what
bullying is and understanding why it happens is important to finding positive and
lasting solutions for everyone involved.
What differences exist in bullying behaviors across different ages, genders,
races and ethnicities? Khadija
Bullying
Researching the topic, we came across interesting finding that can often affect ALL
parties around at the time bullying is happening. Those involved are; the children
who are doing the bullying, those on the other side who are on the receiving end of
the damaging act(s) and I would also say those included in the environment(s)
where the bullying is happening. Participation in bullying is a breeding ground for
continual damaging behavior. Also known as `anti-social` behavior and later on in
life can take on traits of sociopathic or other anti-social disorders. It is important to
bring light to this topic so that these behaviors don't develop in childhood and
carry on into adult life. Standing up for anti-bullying and taking part in campaigns
to stop bullying behavior is much needed in today's world. What more can
individuals do to ensure that the spread of carelessness STOPS in our society and
on a global scale… -Lindsay
Bullying: Accountability

There is no prototype for what makes a bully a bully; however, research shows that
even the smallest participation involving gossiping or talking badly about another
person makes a paper trail of negativity which gives birth to a series of bad
mannered behavior. In many cases; hate is the culprit and it breeds bad behaviors.
If we want healthier environments for children we must walk the walk, and talk the
talk, or in simpler terms, `practice what you preach`. Many adults today should
recognize the importance of early childhood education and the significance of
modeling good behavior at all times as a practiced lifestyle. Practicing
accountability IS best practices. It is with our actions and words that make a
blueprint for lasting effects on children and their development. It should not go
without saying that we all have a part to play in how we teach and treat others
especially as Early Childhood Educators. -Lindsay
Bullying
It is critical that educators inform their children about the importance of bullying
and the long term implications it may have on their victims. Educators can teach
children how to identify bullying, strategies to prevent bullying and give children
the opportunity to anonymously report bullying. Children need to feel comfortable
and safe when going to school or an afterschool program every day for long term
success. It is important that children are familiar with the consequences of bullying
and the long term psychological impact it may have on the victims. If the bully is
educated about the consequences of their actions, it may lead to positive behavior.
Many of the children are considered bystanders who may find the courage to
support the victim in future situations.
How can educators deliver a program that promotes positive peer interactions,
with an emphasis on bullying prevention and deterrence? Drew
BULLYING

• Action Plan: Examining and analysing this issue will help us with strategies to support children as well as
advancing with best practices based on professional learning. Our group had the opportunity to do lobbying
which took place at the centennial college outside the CCSAI on the 6th of April, 2018
• Our target audience was the youth and parents that attend centennial college in Ashtonbee campus.

• The important messages that we wanted our audience to know and remember is, “there are many children
who are involved in bullying” and that “bullying affects everyone, and that all community members have
important roles to play in developing approaches to address and prevent it”.

• During lobbying we had notepads for everyone to sign and write their thoughts about bullying, and we also
gave out brochure with information about bullying.
