IDAHO CORE TEACHING STANDARDS & THE

DANIELSON FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHING

PRESENTATION BY: CAITLIN MAY
WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS?

 There are 10 core standards

 These standards apply to all teacher certification areas
 All teachers in Idaho are expected to know and practice all 10 standards regardless of their specific content area
 The 10 standards are broken into 4 categories: The learner and Learning, Instructional Practice, Professional
Responsibility, and Content
STANDARD #1 “LEARNER DEVELOPMENT”

 This standard describes the educator's knowledge of how different learners develop and grow.
 Educator should be able to recognize patterns of learning that vary across different categories such as linguistic,
social, emotional, and cognitive.
 Educator should be able to develop challenging and appropriate learning experiences.
 Example of implementing this standard might be: An educator that varies their teaching techniques (i.e: visual
lessons, auditory lessons, tactile lessons) because he/she acknowledges that some students learn differently than
others.
STANDARD #2 “LEARNING DIFFERENCES”

 Educator recognizes and understands different ways of learning and performance and bases their lessons
accordingly.
 Educator is able to recognize when students are gifted/talented and may need additional support or
accommodations and is able to provide those things for said student.
 Educator creates and delivers instruction that allows students to demonstrate their unique ways of learning.
 Educator acknowledges that each students experiences, culture, language, and community can influence their way
of learning.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator who identifies a student that may require extra
help learning the language and is able to distinguish an ELL student from a student who requires special education
services.
STANDARD #3 “LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS”

 Educator knows how to keep students not only engaged in learning but also motivated to succeed and progress
in their learning.
 Educator is able to collaborate well with other educators/ school staff to ensure a safe and productive learning
environment.
 Educator is also able to collaborate with students, and families to ensure a safe and open environment to discuss
education and how to help each student succeed individually.
 Educator promotes using technologies in an effective and appropriate way to learn.
 Educator uses a myriad of teaching methods to keep students engaged and learning.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator who uses a reward/ competition system to
motivate their students to stay engaged and participating in the lesson.
STANDARD #4 “CONTENT KNOWLEDGE”

 Educator knows not only the main concepts of a discipline but also common mistakes made when learning the
discipline so he/she can anticipate mistakes being made and how to correct them.
 Educator is able to correctly use academic language and terms in their lessons.
 Educator is able to provide the same information in multiple forms so that all different types of learners are able
to understand and learn the discipline.
 Educator has a vast understanding of student content standards and learning progressions that apply to their
discipline.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator who teaches their students the definitions of
“numerator” and “denominator” (academic language) when delivering a lesson on fractions instead of referring to
them as “top/bottom” numbers.
STANDARD #5 “APPLICATION OF CONTENT”

 Educator understands the idea of critical thinking, how it applies to his/her discipline, and how to teach students
the ability to use critical thinking skills.
 Educator understands various forms of communication and how to use and implement them in the classroom to
ensure all students are learning.
 Educator knows how to access resources and implement them into their teaching methods.
 Educator engages students by applying material to the real world.
 Educator can design assignments or projects that cross between multiple subjects so students learn about more
than one concept in a single assignment.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator showing a student how to calculate sales tax
and explain that’s how it will be done in the real world when making purchases so that a student knows how to
calculate it outside of the classroom.
STANDARD #6 “ASSESSMENT”

 Educator understands and uses multiple types of assessments in the classroom.

 Educator knows when it is appropriate for a student to analyze their own assessments or assignments.
 Educator provides students with meaningful and helpful feedback to ensure they learn from their mistakes.
 Educator know the difference between formative and summative applications of assessments and when it is the right
time to use each of them.
 Educator ensures that assessments match learning objectives and has assessment methods that avoid sources of bias.
 Educator can correctly evaluate assessments to determine a students learning progress and areas that might need to be
further addressed.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator that doesn’t always use the same form of assessment.
One who sometimes gives quizzes and other times has class discussions where they talk about what they learned and
demonstrate that they can recall the information learned.
STANDARD #7 “PLANNING FOR INSTRUCTION”

 Educator is knowledgeable on content standards.

 Educator creates learning experiences that are appropriate for content standards and curriculum.
 Educator plans instruction based on assessments.
 Educator understands how students learn and what effects how they learn.
 Educator uses resources, collaborates, and plans instruction with others that are specialized in specific fields.
 Educator plans instruction on both short and long term goals for the classroom and individual students.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator who notices that their students are struggling
with fractions bases on assessment scores so offers additional recourses/ instruction for homework and following
assessments.
STANDARD #8 “INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES”

 Educator understands the cognitive processes associated with different forms of instruction.
 Educator is well versed on various forms of instruction and applies them in the classroom.
 Educator knows and uses various forms of communication with those around them to ensure the best learning
environment.
 Educator monitors students’ progress and alters instructional strategies when necessary.
 Educator is able to provide the same information to students in multiple forms so that the different types of
learners all understand.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator notices that if she give directions verbally she
has to repeat multiple steps to multiple students so he/she begins to present instructions in written form as well
as verbal form.
STANDARD #9 “ PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND ETHICAL
PRACTICE”

 Educator is vigilant of how his/hers actions affect those around them.

 Educator is always professional and behaving in an ethical manor.
 Educator is continuously evaluating oneself to make sure they are professional and ethical.
 Educator monitors assignments and learning materials to ensure they are professional and ethical
 Educator adapts instruction to fit the needs of the students.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator doesn’t do a lesson geared towards a specific
holiday because he/she knows that there are specific students that don’t celebrate that holiday or may not
celebrate any holidays at all.
STANDARD #10 “LEADERSHIP AND COLLABORATION”

 Educator is always willing to learn more to better their ways of teaching.

 Educator is comfortable seeking out leadership and opportunities to grow and learn more and also to help
students grow and learn more.
 Educator is willing to collaborate with anyone that is appropriate to ensure students are receiving the best
education they can have.
 An example of implementing this standard might be: An educator who takes classes on the new mathematical
teaching methods associated with common core and researches methods that parents can use to help them
understand so they can assist their children with homework.
WHAT IS THE DANIELSON FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHING?

 The framework is a research based set of components of instruction, aligned to the INTASC standards, and
grounded in a constructivist view of learning and teaching (Danielson Group).
