What is the Injection Moulding?

Injection molding is a manufacturing process for

producing parts from
both thermoplastic and thermosetting
plastic materials.
Material is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and
forced into a mold cavity where it cools and hardens
to the configuration of the cavity.

Injection Moulding Process -- Steps
 Feeding -heating-Injecting-Holding-Cooling-
Ejecting
 Material granules are melted down and injected into
the mold. (Mould remains closed)
 The mold is held under pressure until the material
cools and hardens.
 Once the material hardens, the mold is opened and
the part is removed.

What Is Injection Molding Used for?
 Injection molding is used for manufacturing parts of
plastic and rubber
 An injection molding machine can stamp out
metal car shell parts, rubber valve steam seals, and
even plastic toys for kids.
Injection Molding Uses
Plastic
Injection molds uses plastic to make toys for children,
milk containers and movie cases. It also makes other
plastic products such as combs, kitchen utensils and dust
pans.
Injection Molding Uses
Rubber
Injection molds make many rubber automobile
parts. It makes valve steam seals and oil seals for
the engine. It also makes earplugs, rubber hoses
and telecommunications items.

Meaning of Polymers(Plastics)
 Plastic is a material made of polymers by
polymerzing process which possesses high
plasticity.
 Polymers are large molecules formed by adding
the single units called as mon0mers
 E.g Ethylene is a monomer but Polyethylene is
a polymer.
 Styrene is a monomer but Poly Styrene is a
polymer.
Classification of Polymers
 Thermoplastic polymers:
 They become soft on heating and hard on cooling and
this property change can be repeated any number of
times by several heating and cooling
 E.g. Polyehylene(PE), Polystyrene(PS),
Polypropylene(PP), Polyvinylechloride(PVC), Nylon,
ABS
 Thermoset polymers:
 They become soft on initial first heating and become
hard after further heating and remain hard by cooling
and always remain hard
 E.g. Bakelite, PolyUrathane, Formaldehydes
Some Important Polymers and uses
 polystyrene (low-cost, lacking the strength and
longevity of other materials)
 ABS or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (a co-
polymer used for electronics housings)
 nylon (chemically resistant, heat-resistant,
tough and flexible - used for combs, bags, shoe
soles)
 polypropylene (tough and flexible - used for
containers )
 PVC (more common in extrusions as used for
pipes, window frames, insulation on wiring).
