WELDING,
ASME SEC. IX
BRAZING, AND FUSING QUALIFICATIONS 2
ASME SEC. IX

In this code (ASME SEC. IX) regulate requirements

about welding, brazing and fusion operator for the
contruction of component under the rules of the
ASME boiler and pressure vessel code.
This section is divide to three parts, there are:
Part QG : General requirements
Part QW : Welding General Requirements
Part QB : Brazing
Part QF : Plastic Fusing
ASME SEC. IX

Part QG General requirements

• SCOPE
• PROCEDURE
• PERFORMANCE
• VARIAVBEL
• ETC
ASME SEC. IX

2. PART QW (WELDING )
This section will guide and show you about
requirement for welding procedure. In this section is
contain 5 article :
• (article 1) : General Requirements Welding
• (article 2) : Procedure Qualifications
• (article 3) : Welding Performance Qualifications
• (article 4) : Welding Data
• (article 5) : Standart Welding Procedure
Spesifications
ASME SEC. IX

3. PART QB (BRAZING)
This section its same like QW section but in this
section is requiret about brazing process, its
contain 4 article:
• (article 11) : General requirements fo brazing
• (article 12) : Brazing procedure qualifications
• (article 13) : Brazing performance qualifications
• (article 14) : Brazing data
ASME SEC. IX

4. PART QF (PLASTIC FUSING)

This section its same like QW and QB section but
in this section is requiret about plastic fusing
process, its contain 4 article:
• (article 21) : General requirements fo PF
• (article 22) : PF procedure qualifications
• (article 23) : PF performance qualifications
• (article 24) : PF data
PART QW

ARTICLE 1 of Part QW (WELDING)

In the article 1 its contain step, regulation and accepted criteria must be
follow befor or after welding process. Its contain 10 clause:
QW 100
This clause is contain scope of welding procedure, Qualification of
procdure, welder, and operator.

QW 110
This clause is contain permite in welding procedure, welder, and operator.

QW 120
This clause is regulated about groove joint (Figure QW 4.6.1) on the plate
and pipe specimen

QW 130
This clause is regulated about fillet joint (Figure QW 4.6.1) on the plate and
pipe specimen
PART QW

QW 140
In this clause is permitted about type and purpose of examination in welding
procedure. This clause id permitte mechanical test (QW 141), Welder and
operator examination (QW 142 & QW 143) and last is visual inspection (QW 143)

QW 150
Regulation about tension test also know tensile test. For the illustrated picture we
can se figure QW 462.1(a)

QW 160
Regulation about bending test

QW 170
Regulation about notch-toughness test also know impact test in ASTM standart

QW 180
Regulation about fillet weld test for PQR and WPQT
PART QW

• In the QW160 its contain guides, regulation and

acceptance criteria of bend test tha must be follow
before or after bend test. Its contain 3 clause, there
are:
QW 161 (SPECIMENS)
QW 162 (GUIDE_BEND TEST PROCEDURE)
QW 163 (ACCEPANCE CRITERIA BEND TEST)
PART QW

• In the QW 161 says abou the speciment of bend

test based on the type of bend test. The types of
bend test devided in to 7 type. There are:
QW 161.1 Transverse side bend
QW 161.2 Transverse face bend
QW 161.3 Transverse root bend
QW 161.4 Subsie transverse face and root bend
QW 161.5 Longitudinal bend test
QW 161.6 Longitudinal face bend
QW 161.7 Longitudinal root bend
PART QW
QW 161.1 Transverse side bend
The weld is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the specimen, which is bent
surface of the bent speciment so that one of the side surfaces becomes the
convex
PART QW
QW 161.2 Transverse face bend
TRANSVERSE FACE BEND : The weld is trans-verse to the longitudinal axis of the
specimen, which is bent so that the face surface becomes the convex surface
of the bent specimen.
QW 161.3 Transverse root bend
TRANSVERSE ROOT BEND : The weld is trans-verse to the longitudinal axis of the
specimen, which is bent so that the root surface becomes the convex surface of
the bent specimen.
PART QW

QW 161.4 Subsie transverse face and root bend

This Clause regulate the speciment of bend test that has limit dimension
or the dimension not enought to get the general size.

QW 161.5 Longitudinal bend test

It’s may be used in lieu of the transverse side bend, face bend and root
bend test for testing weld metal or base metal combination, which
differ markedlyin bending properties betwen
a. Two base metal, or
b. Weld metal or base metal
PART QW
QW 161.6 Longitudinal face bend
LONGITUDINAL FACE BEND : the weld is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the
specimen, which is bent so that the face surface becomes the convex surface of
the bent specimen.
QW 161.7 Longitudinal root bend
LONGITUDINAL ROOT BEND : the weld is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the
specimen, which is bent so that the root surface becomes the convex side of the
bent specimen.
PART QW

• QW 162 (GUIDE_BEND TEST PROCEDURE)

• QW-162.1 Jigs. Guided‐bend specimens shall be bent in test jigs that
are in substantial accordance with QW‐466. When using the jigs
illustrated in Figure QW-466.1 or Figure
• QW-466.2, the side of the specimen turned toward the gap of the jig
shall be the face for face‐bend specimens, the root for root‐bend
specimens, and the side with the greater discontinuities, if any, for
side‐bend specimens.
PART QW

• QW 163 (ACCEPANCE CRITERIA BEND TEST)

• Have no open discontinuity in the weld metal or haz more than 3 mm
measure in any direction on the convex surface material.
• Open discontinuity on the corner of material shall note be
considered unless there is definate evidence that they result from
lack fusion, slag inclusion, or other internal discontinuity.
• Corrosion resistant weld overlay cladding no open discontinuity more
than 1.5 mm measure in any direction in the cladding and 3 mm
allong weld interface
