a natural phenomenon that occurs in its fullness only north
of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle.

Inhabited regions that can enjoy with this phenomenon are all in the
Northern Hemisphere: Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Finland,
Russia and northern end of Iceland. Due to the inclination of the Earth's axis
of rotation to the ecliptic of about 23 degrees and 27 minutes, at these high
latitudes the Sun does not set during the summer.

 HOW AND WHY
The Earth orbits the Sun on a plane called the
ecliptic. The Earth's Equator is inclined with the ecliptic
by 23°26'. As a result, the North and South poles are in
turn inclined toward the Sun for 6 months. Close to the
summer solstice, on June 21, the Northern Hemisphere
reaches its maximum inclination toward the Sun and
the Sun illuminates all the polar area down to latitude
+66°34'. As seen from the polar area, the Sun does not
set, but only reaches its lowest altitude at midnight.
Latitude +66°34' defines the Arctic Circle (southernmost
latitude in the Northern Hemisphere where the midnight
sun can be seen.
How Midnight Sun Affects Life in the
Polar Regions
The followers of Islam also face some unique challenges in these regions.
During Ramadan, the Muslims fast during the daytime, and end it at
sunset. As the sun continues to shine for more than 24 hours in the polar
regions, fasting during Ramadan could imply a total abstinence from
food. As a result, fasting time is often modified according to the time of
Mecca or Medina, or a place nearest to that area. The 5 obligatory
prayers of the Muslims are also timed according to the position of the
Sun. In the polar regions, Muslims can offer these prayers as per the
timing of Mecca or a nearby place having normal day and night cycle.
