Background of the Research

• Karabuga and Kaya (2013) argued that reading


is a troubleshooting process to understand the
meaning of the text not just words but also other
aspects such as ideas, information, claims and
arguments in a text.
• Motivation is the heart of the learning process,
as well as the forces that can support students in
learning activities to achieve certain goals
Questions of the Research
• Is there relationship between reading motivation and
reading comprehension achievement at vocational
school?
Objectives of the Research
To investigate whether or not there is relationship
between reading motivation and reading
comprehension achievement at vocational school.
Significance of the Research

Reading motivation and reading comprehension


are important to study English. This study was
trying to find the relationship between reading
motivation and reading comprehension.
Research Scope and Limitation
• This research focuses on the tenth grade
students’ SMK PGRI 1 Giri Banyuwangi in the
2017/2018 academic year with all of major

• Ideally the researcher should be able to analyze


all levels. Because due to administrative and
academic consideration, the samples of the
research are only the tenth grade students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
READING MOTIVATION
• Reading motivation is motivational impulse to
read so that the emergence of interest to
continue reading.
• Mori (2002) refers that motivating students to
continue reading books in English can
strengthen students to keep reading.

• Intrinsic Motivation
• Extrinsic Motivation
• Reading Efficacy
Intrinsic Motivation
Reiss (2012) said intrinsic motivation is “doing
something for its own sake” for no reason other
than because that is what he or she wants to do.
Extrinsic Motivation
Reiss (2012) said extrinsic motivation is doing
something that refers to the pursuit of a particular
goal.
Reading Efficacy
Kucukoglu (2013) said that in self-efficacy
determines how people feel, think, motivate
themselves and behave.
Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is the process of
understanding the meaning of the text through
students' knowledge.

Hypothesis
• There is relationship between reading
motivation and reading comprehension of the
tenth students’ SMK PGRI 1 Giri Banyuwangi in
the 2017/2018 academic year

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Research Design
Correlation is a statistical test to determine trends
or patterns for two (or more) variables or two sets
of data to vary consistently (Cresswell, 2012).

Data Collection
• The researcher distributing Foreign Language
Motivation Reading Questionnaire (FLMRQ)
• The researcher distributing Reading
Comprehension Test
Data Analysis Method
To analyze the data, first researcher present the
raw value of students' reading motivation based
on the questionnaires and their reading
comprehension based on the reading test. Then,
the researcher will analyze the correlation by
using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS program.
