Alternative Fuels: Phasing

Out Gasoline
Storyboard
By Alyssa Johnson
Title/Captions: Alternative Fuels: Phasing out Gasoline

Narration: How does the future of alternative fuels affect

me?” Well the less you know about alternative fuel options,
the less prepared you are to make decisions on policy change.
Let’s look into the implications of alternative fuel.

Dramatic Question
Title/Captions: None

Narration: When I say “alternative fuels,” I’m mean the

fluid you pump into a gas tank or electricity you charge a car
with. At the gas pump, you usually have the option to fill up
with 87 unleaded, 89 plus, 93 supreme, and sometimes
diesel?

Conventional Gasoline/Diesel
Title/Captions: none

Narration: These fossil fuels pollute our cities and have

monopolized the fuel industry. Almost every combustion
engine can be converted to run on fuels other than gasoline
using electronic conversion kits, but politicians have
outlawed the commercial sale of these kits thanks to big oil.

Conversion Kits
Title/Captions: none

Narration: Luckily, hundreds of privately-owned fueling

stations offer gasoline, E-85, and charging ports. E-85 is a
blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. It’s cheaper than
conventional gasoline, but it emits less CO2 than gasoline
when burned. Ethanol is produced by the fermentation of
corn or sugarcane into alcohol.

E-85
Title/Captions: none

Narration: Hundreds of cars and trucks have been

manufactured to run on any mixture of gasoline, ethanol,
or methanol. These are called “FlexFuel” vehicles which
have a yellow gas cap instead of a black one.
Unfortunately, most FlexFuel owners don’t realize that
they can use E-85 instead of gasoline.

Definition

Narration: Now that we covered the common alternative fuels, let’s

look at the less common options.

speaking the narration.

Alternative Fuels
Title/Captions: none

Narration: Methanol can be produced from the

processing of wood, biomass materials, food waste, and
solid waste. You can basically make Methanol from trash! In
the U.S. alone we produce close to 400 million metric tons
of trash per year, and it keeps piling up!

Methanol
Title/Captions: none

Narration: Compressed Natural Gas, or

CNG, is typically used in larger vehicles because
it requires a larger tank. In fact, vehicles such as
dump trucks and metro buses utilize the fuel on
a daily basis to help lessen carbon emissions in
the city. Smaller cars can run on CNG, but you’d
have to give up your trunk space to make space
for that tank.

CNG
Title/Captions: none

Narration: And your car can run on CNG after paying

$2,500 +. Yup, you heard me right. Even though it’s better for
the environment, it’s expensive to convert a conventional
vehicle to run on CNG.

Narration: The mass production and expansion of alternative

fuels would help diminish the CO2 emissions produced by our daily
lives. The topic of global warming is highly debatable, but the fact
of the matter is that we need to find a better way to manage the
waste we produce. When I think about the future of the
environment, all I think about is the quality of life for my future
children. In this technological age, it’s time we start thinking about
our fueling options and waste management.

Emotional Content
Title/Captions: Alternative Fuels: Phasing out Gasoline

Narration: Americans have countless options when it comes to

food, clothes, cars, homes, make-up, and so on; but our fueling
options are limited and have become monopolized by the oil
industry. With big money and large corporations, politicians are
there to litigate accordingly. Let’s make alternative fuel our next big
thing! Getting educated about these facts will get you to vote for the
right politicians and remind you that we must make today better for
tomorrow.
